School uniforms have become another way to fleece parents to make someone else rich.
I remember when a school near me changed from normal grey socks (which you could buy anywhere), to grey socks with a thin yellow or blue band around the top.
Funny how the prices of the new banded socks were three times the price of normal grey socks and could only be bought from one supplier, with links to the school board.
Do they really expect parents to beleive that the minute variations in the grey socks (you couldn’t really notice the difference even if you were looking) was causing such an issue at school, that they had to standardise them and make them unique?
No, it’s profiteering bollocks.
Im not against uniforms, in fact they’re a good idea, with a coloured jumper or badge here or there. But you should be able to buy generic staples like skirts, trousers, shirts, socks and shoes, not be ripped off by specialist suppliers.
This is absolutely ridiculous. In what way does the child’s skirt affect the school, her behaviour or learning?
It would be very interesting to see who is making some money on the back of all the uniform for this one school having to be bought from one place..
This is getting silly now – when I was at school in the 90s the only things you needed to buy through the school “shop”* were the tie, a sew-on badge of the school logo for your jumper, and 2 PE tops.
Everything else you could get anywhere, because the uniform list just said “black trousers”, “black skirt” etc.
I really don’t think we’d have noticed if some lads had Asda trousers versus Trutex or whatever…
EDIT – * the school ‘shop’ was a wool shop in the village that also sold bits and pieces for a few local schools’ uniforms.
What’s to say that the school doesn’t get a cut of the fee that the uniform shop gets? Hence why they enforce it so much.
Surely this kind of thing should be the same as in workplaces.
If there is a requirement to wear a specific (not generic) item of clothing, from a specific supplier, it should be provided.
There is no way on earth any employer would get away with a uniform policy that said: “you must wear these trousers/socks/shirts from the supplier my family/mates own”.
the government really needs to step in here and say any state funded school can’t require students/parents to buy from a specific place – but well…i wouldn’t hold my breath.
its almost like letting 3rd party organisations (some profit driven) run schools was a bad idea.
Not a skirt, but the school never had a problem with my trousers, which came from various places over the years.
I think if they go to court and claim discrimination, the school will have a massive legal problem. This is all getting rather ridiculous, and it is basically just bullying now.
Maybe we should just ditch school uniforms as a concept. They’ve proven to just be a means of profiteering from a captive market.
Some SLTs have lost the plot entirely
Dress codes are fine, although I would argue that continuing to complain about reduced physical activity levels and rising obesity issues in children and young people and at the same time compelling them to wear uniforms based on an old fashioned idea of what is smart and unsuited to physical activity is a bad idea. Extremely strict uniform rules are not fine. They create barriers to education and participation. Schools exist to educate young people, not to police their clothing.
While I’m here, can anyone explain to me the cost of school trips!
When I was a kid in year 4 around 25 year ago my friend and I had to walk to school in extreme winds rain and hail. When we got to class we where soaked and clearly Ill.
His teacher sent him back home but mine told me to get undressed and place my clothes on the radiator for 20 mins. Those 20 mins where assembly so I skipped that and stood freezing in my underwear in class for 20 mins. To only put back on soggy clothes. I was I’ll for 2 weeks after and forced to continue going to school.
On the plus side I did find a game boy colour game in the teacher bin (wario land 3)
Insta FOIs into the school about decelerations if interest involving teachers, governors and school uniform suppliers and another onr about profits from uniform.
Don’t care what’s true and what isn’t. Put the wind up the pricks. I’m all for uniforms but not at the expense of an education
If it looked identical how the fuck did the school know
This is absolutely disgusting, the member of staff at this school who did this should be ashamed of themselves.
Yep, this is actually justified outrage. Schools and their branded uniform BS are absolutely taking the proverbial.
In the UK school uniforms came about so poor kids wouldn’t feel so different from the rich kids this is all true. Like in America kids where casual clothing and you can isolate kids from rich vs poor they didn’t want to do this in the UK to be fare on kid’s. But now you have to have just as much money to Offord a uniform it is disgusting..
Labour can have a very easy win here. It’s a case of pure monopoly, price caps, in a rare case, are more than fair.
The secondary I went to used to just need the jumper with logo, then it also become the polo with logo.
In the many years since I left (well over a decade…) it became an academy.
Now the uniform is branded shirt, branded blazer, branded tie.
All a uniform should be is black shoes of a formal style, black trousers/skirt/shorts (the latter two being ~knee length), a plain polo of a single colour, and a jumper of a single colour, with the patch available at a sensible price.
Piling on more expenses, and having children dressed up as little executives all day, isn’t useful or helpful.
