  1. ‘Fiscally responsible’ Cameron and Osbourne did a great job for British Steel eh? Just another to add to their Legacies, one could say.

  2. Could’ve just kept British Steel if they were just going to throw money at it continuously anyway. Wonder how this sort of thing compares to extortion?

  3. Again I’ll make the point – why is the government subsidising this, when, even **with** the subsidy, the expectation is to lose 3,000 of the 4,000 jobs there.

At that point, let Tata close it, and if it’s really that important to the UK, have the government buy it and run it.

Paying 40% of the cost to Tata on the threat of them closing it makes no sense – you aren’t protecting any jobs here, or encouraging new investment.

  4. Steel production is a vital component of an advanced economy. It should be state run as privatisation has obviously failed in this case when Tata come back to the government every few years begging for another handout.

It was only 2016 we were last here with Port Talbot. And we will be here again in a few years if we keep this up.

  5. I wonder why the ties of Sunak’s family to Tata are not looked at.

Why this money is given to this particular steel company and not the others?

Now if Tata Steel closed the factory, that £500m split among 8000 workers would give £62,500 each.

  6. How many times is that now? Basically paying the wages of the workers and any profit or revenue goes into paying the TATA executives.

  7. Surely it’s time to nationalise this place, tax payers being taken for mugs by tata

  8. £500 million to lose 3000 jobs.

Jesus, our political leaders are incompetent.

  9. From 2016:-

    >Anne Soubry, the Conservative MP for Broxtowe, has said that the Tories aren’t ruling out renationalising Tata Steel but that it could not permanently take it into public ownership because of EU competition rules.

    Well what’s your excuse now?

  10. That’s 10 million for a lick of paint at steel works and the rest to divided between Rishi and his Tata mates

  11. Tata Steel is quite literally one if the richest companies on planet Earth but us serfs have to pay them half a billion quid to upgrade their production line?

And you just know they’ll pay barely any tax on any profits they make.
