It was Europe’s chance of becoming a civilisation state like China is. One massive supernation with maintained infrastructure, advanced reading, writing and mathematics.
The fall of Rome and the disdain early Christianity had against science and innovation (something Islam has had since the fall of Baghdad until the present) is one of the biggest catastrophes that has befallen the progress of humanity.

Even the sacred name “Roman” sounds majestic and badass.
