I can see why they are upset but the onus isn’t really on Reardons Group to provide LGBT spaces to Cork City.
There is nothing stopping them from going to the bar either although I can’t blame them for wanting to avoid a Freshers Week crowd
Way to alienate your clientele.
So are the LGBTQ+ people for inclusivity or just inclusivity for them ?
I see in the article the use of “safe space”.
How many of the bars in cork are “unsafe” spaces. I’ve spent years in Cork and been to many bars with friends who are gay and never heard any of them mention having issues.
Hopefully a new bar which respects gay and trans people (hopefully run by a gay/trans person) opens up instead.
“Putting profit before the gay community. ”
Bit strange to be annoyed that a business wants to make money?
Is this a permanent change theyve made or just a promotional thing for freshers week?
Even from a business perspective I don’t see how this rebrand makes sense. There are a million conventional pubs already out there and zoomers are gay as Christmas. Plenty of cash to be made by an LGBT bar
Literally any of Benny’s bars are LBGTQI+ friendly…I’ve had a pint in the Mutton with a Drag Queen (using a hair straightener and flinging hair all over the place, but that’s besides the point) during pride week with zero issues. I think the only problem I ever ran into was when I was having a conversation with someone and some idiot told me “he is gay” like it actually mattered. I can almost say as fact that if anyone is being harassed or threatened that the bar staff will quickly chuck the offender out, regular or not, if it’s brought to their attention. Now I do understand that queer bars are welcome and necessary but to describe The Chambers as a “safe space” is disingenuous. It’s anything but..it’s a dive dressed up, the owners are assholes, the staff overlook everything from people being harassed to being flat out sexually assaulted and I’ve heard the bouncers say some of the most horrible homophobic shit. IMO, the community is better off without it. They’ve shown their true colours, why would anyone want to go back?
I can’t believe the capitalists are capitalising.
Isn’t that a fairly small pub? Surely it would have been full anyway. Weird choice but also it’s their business they can do whatever they want with it.
If an Irish pub in the UK took down all its tricolours and GAA jerseys for freshers week i wonder if people in the comment section would be singing the same tune
Students out there hitting the hard topics.
> tell the drag performers maybe come back in a few weeks because they think they can get bigger profits during Freshers’ Week
It sucks, but that’s how gigging works. Your regular work gets shunted aside for every festival or event that draws a bigger crowd.
If there wasn’t a sign with “we’re here, we’re queer, we just wanted beer” I’m going to be so angry
All this for taking down a few flags ?
The bar can do whatever it wants but so can its clientele. If the LGBT community feel they have been slighted and pushed aside so they can make a quick buck for freshers week then they have every right to to make a stand and say they are not going to support the bar any more.
From what I’ve heard and read it this more the final straw. It seems the Riordans group were horrible to work for and according to one drag performer the queer community were often privately the butt of the joke among some of the staff at Riordans group
So yeah as a gay person Im choosing not to give them my money any more, and I’d ask the same of supportive friends and family. They are shit bars anyway. Lets hope a queer run LGBT friendly bar comes out of this so it actually has the interests of the the community at the heart of it.
This story has, “Exclusive pub decides to welcome all. Members in a rage” vibes.
