Europe, not America, is now Ukraine’s largest backer — Commitments from the EU and its member states are worth almost twice as much as those from America

  1. The latest analysis from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy finds that donors pledged some €237.9bn ($256bn) of support between January 24th 2022, one month before the war began, and July 31st 2023:^1

    >The vast majority came from America and the institutions and member states of the European Union. However, the balance between those donors is changing (see chart).

    >For much of the war America has been Ukraine’s most generous backer.

    >But aid from the EU, including long-term pledges, has grown to almost double America’s sum, at €131.9bn since January 2022 compared with €69.5bn.

    >Add non-EU European countries like Britain and Norway, and the gap grows yet wider.

    >

    >The discrepancy results from a difference in approach. America’s and Europe’s short-term commitments—support for one year or less—are roughly equivalent.

    >Yet European donors are increasingly pledging multi-year aid packages.

    >For instance, the EU’s “Ukraine Facility”, a €50bn budgetary-support programme, lasts until 2027.

    >Germany has pledged €10.5bn of military support, to be delivered between 2024 and 2027. And Norway has set up a €6.5bn fund to provide military, humanitarian and economic help to Ukraine for the next five years.

    >Pledges are different from delivery—and some European promises are conditional on Ukraine’s government meeting certain obligations.

    >

    >America remains vital. The amounts totted up by the institute cover financial, humanitarian and military aid. All are crucial.

    >But when it comes to the weapons and munitions that make a difference on the battlefield, America still dwarfs its European peers.

    >Its military pledges stood at €42.1bn by the end of July, more than double those of Germany, Europe’s largest military donor (see chart two).

  2. Never got the comparison. Europe is not a singular country.

  3. Yeah, but that’s all of the countries together. If the EU can back it up and support Ukraine better then i’d much rather have the funds domestically used here in the US

Edit: Also, as someone who has contacted senators and pushed for more Ukraine aid, this title kind of irritates. Like, the US has provided countless military hardware and training and this is like, “wElL eU cOnTrIbUtEs MoRe”. Feels incredibly disrespectful

  4. Posts like this are so Fu%$ing stupid!!! Is this suppose to make the EU feel better? Is it is it suppose to piss off the Americans? What is the purpose?

  5. Great, let’s have a *who can help Ukraine most* competition!

  6. Add Canada to the US and call it north america at least… EU is not one country

  7. That’s an entire continent vs 1 country. Secondly why the f*ck does it matter? America has not just pledged, but actively supplied more than any other country. That is a fact. Countries are doing what they can to help without compromising their own security and making sure what is given can be resupplied to some extent. This is pathetic. Of all the things you could write an article about, someone would pick something this f*cking stupid.

  8. Isn’t a lot of that pledged for the future? Like it hasn’t actually happened. I am donating 100 billion to Ukraine next year. US is back in the lead now.
Jokes aside this is good though.

  9. Let’s just divide the ‘helping’ nations with banter and comparison stats. Wtf …. why not just keep it simple. Good vs evil,,, and we are all the ‘good’. Done. Fuk the krimelin. Fuk putler

  10. In other news, the rest of the world has a higher GDP than America.

What is the point of this post? USA has been the single largest backer of Ukraine in both weapons and money. So now we’re comparing one country to pretty much an entire continent, and not only that, but it’s “promised” aid instead of aid that has actually been delivered. This “news” link is to a paywall website that is just trying to make money through yellow journalism and clickbaity titles.

  11. Proximity to an established threat is an important motivator.

  12. When your next-door neighbor’s house is on fire, you should not expect the next county’s fire department to put more effort into putting it out.

    Just sayin.

  13. Listen man. We have our own economic problems over here across the pond. The majority of us support Ukraine and fucking HATE Russia, but trying to say the US isn’t doing enough is just asinine.

  14. This looks like one of those RUZZIAN planted articles meant to cause strife. F this article. American here and proud of everyone in the West’s efforts minus Switzerland. Let there be no divisions made upon the democracies of the west.

  15. I’m from Denmark a little country in EU. I need to ask why you are doing this. Could you have handled this with no American support, or what are you trying to tell us? We are more nato people in Europe, so isn’t ok. Or should we all just empty our piggy bank into Ukraine. I’m so confused about this comment, is it a competition???

  16. An accurate statement of facts seems to be making some commenters sound really angry and defensive. It’s kind of weird. The fact that the EU is donating more in the long-term to Ukraine than the US is a GOOD THING. The US is still sending what it sends best, and it’s still unrivaled: military aid.

  17. Americans shouldn’t take this is a bad thing. I’m glad Europe finally grew a pair

  18. Europe is a continent not a country. US is therefore the largest backer still

  19. As it should be.
More from everyone…but Europe should be in the lead.

  20. As it should be I think, Ukraine is literally in their back yard. We’ll supply the bullets and the bombs, you supply the beans and the beds 👍🏻

  21. So the European continent has finally surpassed the United States. Good it’s about time Europe does their part and they need to do even more

  22. I mean it’s the European continent, and there’s like 20+ countries that can help, this is how it should be

  23. American here. Honestly, what I would like to see is all NATO members commit to equal shares of their GDP to give to Ukraine. We have the most so we should give the most, but everyone should give equally within their means. We are all in this together.

  24. What about 28 countries providing more aid than the USA (alone)…WHAT, REALLY
