  1. Austria is a major transit hub. I dont think he realises how much that would hurt the entire EU.

  2. > Romania’s Prime Minister says that if Austria believes the Schengen area is not working, then it should leave the European free movement area. Ciolacu recalled that Romania will file a complaint with the EU Court of Justice if Austria does not accept Romania into Schengen.

    > “I will never be hypocritical, I cannot say that I have nothing against Romania but that the Schengen area is outdated. Then why did we vote last year with Croatia? It’s a legitimate question from Romanians to Prime Minister Nehammer. If Schengen is so destroyed, I have no problem with Austria leaving Schengen, building kilometre-long walls (at the borders) with barbed wire and electricity, I have no problem. If Austria wants this approach with fences, let them pay for them, let them leave Schengen and we will manage within Schengen without any problems”, said the Romanian Prime Minister.

    > Marcel Ciolacu reminded that if Austria votes against Romania at the next JHA Council, then the Romanian state will file a complaint with the CJEU: “Moreover, I would like to have the European Council, the European Parliament and the European Commission as our partners in this endeavour. So things are not so comfortable for Minister Nehammer”.

    > The Prime Minister also indicated that he is in contact with the Prime Minister of Spain so that he includes Schengen enlargement on the agenda of the next JHA Council.

    > “In December we have the second meeting, both are under the Spanish Presidency and I am in contact with the Spanish Prime Minister for inclusion on the agenda, there is all his openness and support for Romania to join the Schengen area. There is also a vote against Bulgaria exercised by the Netherlands, we are also waiting for a decision from the Netherlands to see if we can go ahead with the package or”, added Marcel Ciolacu.

    > Austria continues to oppose
Veto for Romania and Bulgaria in the Schengen area remains in place, says Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer.

    > Despite dissatisfaction in Romania and Bulgaria over Austria’s refusal to admit the two countries to the Schengen area without EU border controls, the chancellor maintains his veto, according to [derstandard.de](https://www.derstandard.de/story/3000000187234/-g-e-s-p-e-r-r-t-bis-160923-1900-uhr-nehammer-erw228gt-au223erordentliche-grenzkontrollen-auch-zu-italien)

    > “Enlargement can only be implemented when external border protection works. Now is not the right time,” he stressed to the Kleine Zeitung.

  3. And not a single word about illegal migration in Europe. Austria is surrounded by Schengen countries, yet last year there were 112.000 asylum request from illegal immigrants from Africa and the Middle East in Austria. They didnot suddenly appear in middle of Europe by themselves. Yet checking trucks and vans at the border is criticized.

  4. Austria: “Schengen is broken, we shouldn’t accept new countries until the immigration problem is fixed.”

Also Austria: lets Croatia into Schengen with no concerns.

The cognitive dissonance is on next level here..

  5. Romania PM, a man with character, I say this because Austria seems to want to get more time, maybe but maybe we will forget about Schengen approach
