  1. I love how the headline just bears no resemblance to the points being made in the article, with the “ex cop” thing being basically a throwaway line

  2. > “They will intervene and make a citizen’s arrest and detain the individual,” he told MailOnline. “But even in those cases when we’ve detained an offender and called for police assistance the police don’t attend in 80% of cases.

    >”That’s despite us having the offender in our control in the store, with CCTV evidence.’We’ll keep them until we know if the police are going to turn up or not – that could be 15 minutes or an hour.

Lmao what? They’ve literally done everything for the police – they have evidence, and a suspect _in custody_ and still the police don’t show up.

  3. If you see someone stealing food you didn’t see them.

  4. Really couldn’t care less about people stealing from chain shops. The argument that people are just stealing to sell for drugs etc holds no water, maybe fix the problem that pushes people into crime like that in the first place.

And don’t tell me there “isn’t enough money” to fix the problems in our society, the resource exist to do so, it’s the will that is lacking. They don’t want to fix homelessness and destitution because it’s a fundamental part of the system that keeps you in line. Play the game or go homeless and die, whilst the select few enjoy decadence and excess beyond imagining.

  5. I may be crazy, but if this problem continues to escalate I can totally see if the endgame is just a lot of brick and mortar shops closing and switching to delivery only model.

A lot of items in my local Tesco Express such as fruits, ready meals, meats already cost noticeably more than if I order them for delivery.

Some of that is due to the fact that a large warehouse is more efficient to operate than a small shop, but shoplifting will only exacerbate this.
