Rishi Sunak considering weakening key net zero policies

  1. Why will other countries bother with cutting their policies after seeing us water down our places and not lead by example?

Not that some others will even care either, they’re still on the idea that coal is the best power source.

  2. Sunak is such a useless puppet.

He literally bends over to the whims of the right wing of his party, and also to big money.

He’s not doing this because it’s what the public want, because every survey conducted shows Net Zero as popular.

He’s doing this for the £££.

  3. We’re doing so well with reducing emissions that we’re making others look bad. Only sporting that we give them a chance, added to which we wouldn’t want to risk accidentally making the world a better place too soon.

  4. >First, the government would push the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars – currently set to come into force in 2030 – back to 2035. The 2030 date has been government policy since 2020.
Second, the government would significantly weaken the plan to phase out the installation of gas boilers by 2035, saying that they only want 80% to be phased out by that year.
Third, homeowners and landlords would be told that there will be no new energy efficiency regulations on homes. Ministers had been considering imposing fines on landlords who fail to upgrade their properties to a certain level of energy efficiency.

Last legs of a government out of ideas and almost out of time. So they are not ditching net zero which will actually matter to that component of their vote most motivated by this issue, while the nitty gritty is shifting furniture around level that means the most liberal of their support will see them as leaning to the right.

It’s a tepid neither nor that is not going to shift any political dials. Just desperately trying to get a couple of cheap headlines for the Sun and Mail readers.

Thing with the cars, as cities start banning them toward the end of the decade, sales will plummet so you are going to see smaller volume runs thus growing prices. The manufacturers are already pricing in the need to shift to electric. So it’s not really going to do much either way. And if they’re not in government for 5 years from next years there is nothing really they can do.

I am sure there will be some “strong” opinions. But the details are dull. Net zero impact on their chances next May.

  5. I said it when brexit happened, we would end up the dirty man of Europe

  6. What an absolute fucking bellend.
Him and his cronies supporting it, just because we are ahead doesn’t mean we should just give up and rest on our laurels, it means we are on the right path. Others being behind doesn’t mean to should stop, did he learn nothing from the story of the tortoise and the hare?

  7. This is a terrible idea.

I live in Wales and Drakeford will likely jump all over this to make our lives even more miserable, with another one of his, “Hyurr in Way-ulls, we shoot ourselves in both feet, just to be different to the Westminster Tories”, policy approaches.

He’ll probably bring all the Net Zero fuckery forward by 5yrs.

  8. This is pretty sensible, the EU isn’t banning petrol and diesel sales til 2035, there will still be tons of demand for these vehicles in the early 2030s.

If you park on the street and only drive 5000 miles a year do you really want to be forced to buy an EV in 6 years? It would probably make your life significantly less convenient and won’t save you any money.

  9. But not changing the legal commitment to get to net zero by 2050 …

So make things significantly more difficult for future governments to hit that milestone.

Say we get, optimistically, 10 years of non-tory rule, in 2035 future Tories can point and label the lack of progress a Labour problem while the right wing press memory holes this moment.

They will be corrupt and immoral until the very last day.
