Verder is er weinig liefde verloren tussen Groen en de staatssecretaris. ‘Ik ken Nicole de Moor als een vrouw met empathie, maar ze moet werken binnen het kader dat haar door haar partij is opgelegd’, oordeelt vicepremier Petra De Sutter. ‘**CD&V kiest ervoor om het narratief van extreemrechts over migratie te proberen kopiëren. Ik zie helaas vooral continuïteit met het beleid van Theo Francken.** De aantallen asielzoekers die zich hier vandaag melden, zijn nog altijd verwaarloosbaar klein in verhouding met de hele bevolking. En laten we wel wezen: voor ons blijft de opvang van asielzoekers, ook alleenstaande mannen, een fundamenteel recht.’

>Wil Groen straks ook deze Europese deal aan de Belgische regeringstafel tegenhouden? ‘Wij zullen ons akkoord niet geven over zaken waarmee we het niet eens zijn’, zegt De Sutter. ‘In de plannen die nu op tafel liggen, wordt er een bedrag op elke asielzoeker geplakt dat lidstaten kunnen afkopen om minder mensen te hoeven opvangen. Dat vinden wij verschrikkelijk. Het zou goed kunnen dat De Moor straks moet onderhandelen over een deal waarover België zich als lidstaat zal onthouden. Ze zal dat misschien wat *ambetant* vinden, maar dat is al eerder gebeurd. De staatssecretaris zal met ons rekening moeten houden.’

These include housing violations, the incarceration of families with children and the tightening of family reunification, over which the Dutch government recently fell. Beyond that, there is little love lost between Green and the secretary of state. ‘I know Nicole de Moor as a woman of empathy, but she has to work within the framework imposed on her by her party,’ assessed Deputy Prime Minister Petra De Sutter. ‘**CD&V chooses to try to copy the narrative of the extreme right on migration. Unfortunately, I see continuity especially with Theo Francken’s policy**. The numbers of asylum seekers who show up here today are still negligible compared to the entire population. And let’s face it: for us, the reception of asylum seekers, including single men, remains a fundamental right.

She might find that a bit embarrassing, but that has happened before. The secretary of state will have to take us into account.’
