Government provides scholarships to all Ukrainian students in Korea… 780 million won invested
The government has decided to provide scholarships to all Ukrainian students studying abroad at domestic universities. A total of 780 million won is expected to be invested as a follow-up measure to the Korea-Ukraine summit.
On the 26th, the National Institute for International Education under the Ministry of Education announced that it had changed the ‘Basic Plan for the Short-Term Course Support Project for Government Invited Foreign Scholarship Students (GKS)’ and added a plan to support international students from Ukraine.
As a result, any Ukrainian student studying in Korea can receive support for tuition and living expenses for the second semester of this year. However, among the 153 Ukrainian students in Korea, 54 students, including international students (39), students on leave of absence (9), and completed research students (6), who are already receiving GKS degree program scholarships, were excluded, and the remaining 99 students are eligible.
Looking at the specific amount, the scholarship is limited to 5 million won for a degree program and 2 million won for Korean language training, and living expenses range from 900 to 1 million won per month depending on the course. The required budget is 780 million won, using the estimated balance of GKS project expenses.
Previously, after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in July, President Yoon Seok-yeol declared that he would promote the ‘Ukraine Peace and Solidarity Initiative’ that provides comprehensive support for security, humanity, and reconstruction. The educational institute explains that this scholarship support is also part of reconstruction support.
The Institute of Education explained, “As this is a follow-up to the summit and is part of humanitarian student support, there will be no separate screening to select scholarship students,” and “All students recommended by the university will be selected as scholarship students.”
