  1. Can we start to hold these mega corporations responsible for their content? As a father of a 6 year old girl, user generated content terrifies me. Try my best to teach her about scams and lies online.

  2. TikTok is rather popular around the world, none of these harmful trends ever take off in its country of origin however.

Whether this particular case is true or not, the app is more than capable of moderating user content when it wants to.

SIck of the slap on the wrist fines, literal drops in the ocean.

  3. This is absolutely terrifying. I can’t begin to imagine the horror of finding your 14 year old dying/dead in their bedroom, as all as a result of a meaningless internet challenge.

Kids and teenagers will do stupid things, it’s part of growing up. We do however need to ensure that there are robust systems in place to stop the spread of these idiotic challenges and protect children. My heart goes out to this poor girls family, what a meaningless and tragic loss.

  4. I think it says a lot that our government is happy to collect 354 million in fines from TikTok to settle violations they made around the privacy of underage users and not take matters further. The platform is harmful to kids, hypersexualised, bullying, creeps everywhere and disinformation around mostly anything.

It’s made in China, yet they cannot use it there, they have a domestic version called Douyin. The apps are nearly identical but with one critical difference: users under 14 are required to use Douyin in healthy moderation on “teenage mode”, meaning safer content and restricted hours and limits.
