To be fair, almost all of Russia’s European neighbors have expressed that fear, multiple times.
But “we” should have stepped in hard in 2008. Instead we saw Russia a source of cheaper oil and gas, and thought we could appease and control the Kremlin by pulling them into the economic fold.
I hope we have learned by now. But the constant nagging about fear of escalation says otherwise.
I hope many of these men survived and are in positions of leadership in Ukraine right now.

Very little amount of people expected that it will be Ukraine from all of their neighbors invaded. You once were brothers. So I think that was the reason why Russia very much overestimated public sympathy to their regime.
