  1. Makes me wonder why police bother rushing at all if they can get jailed. How about they take it easy and follow 20/30 limits?

  2. Rodney Folkes described Thompson’s sentence following his daughter’s death as “an insult to me, my family and our black community”

Confused as to why the back community would be insulted?

  3. “An Insult to the Black community” – What has being Black got to do with this? – Stupid Race Baiting BBC back at it.

Maybe don’t step out in front of a car, call me crazy but looking before you cross the road was taught in Primary school.

  4. So it looks like what happened was two police cars speeding an an incident. The women had let the first car go past, as you do, but then understandably thought that was the end of it so continued to cross before being hit by the second police car who also had their lights off.

I don’t think a speed cap makes sense but police already do have to consider the safety of a chase vs. the importance of it. This incident, a man acting oddly, doesn’t seem to warrant two police cars going at 84mph. There is also the question of convoys and the danger of having two police cars behind each other at speed when the human mind is probably going to give more focus to the first. Then finally the police officer who hit her not having his lights on, I assume this is why the officer was fired and jailed.

  5. this situation can happen to any emergency vehicles that need to get to a location asap. Ambulances, firetrucks, etc. The key issue is if proper protocol is followed. If the sirens are on and lights are on, then a pedestrian who was not paying attention is the one at fault. The sirens on police cars are ear piercing loud. Honestly pedestrians should be responsible for their own safety when they are crossing the road unless they cross at a pedestrian walkway. Accidents happen, and that’s all they are, accidents. Always assume the cars not going to stop and or a crazy person will speed down the road when you are crossing.

  6. Apparently the Officer was jailed for three years and sacked from the force. He had his sirens on but had turned his blue lights off so as to not distract the lead Police car he was following.

So it was a conscious decision to turn the lights off and maybe something he had been trained to do.

The incident the two cars were responding to was a Man behaving erratically and throwing rubbish into the street and there were also reports of a woman trying to escape him. As reported in the article.

I’m not sure that travelling at 80mph + in a residential road with siren on but lights off in convoy is a good idea. Personally I would have assumed that if there was more than one Police car, and the first one had passed me with its lights on any other cars would have their blue lights on as well.

At 80mph on a residential road in London the reaction time of the driver is going to be incredibly short.

So, there but for the grace of god go I and I hope she rests in peace.

  7. I’m more curious about what’s not included in the article. What would be the punishment if a civilian had caused this accident by driving at almost 3x the speed limit? What is the history of such crimes in recent times?

  8. This almost happened to me in my first week in the UK. Was about to step onto a crosswalk in a green light and the police car zoomed inches in front of my face.

  9. We need to stop making everything about race, or we forever be divided and fighting one another, which is exactly what the tory scum want.
