Watch them scrap HS2 but then spend more on inheritance tax cuts lol
What a pathetic country
I work on the railway. HS2 isn’t about speed. It’s the increase in capacity. Our trains are just as busy as pre Covid. We need extra capacity.
The best way of doing that is by building new lines. Pulling the plug would be catastrophic.
I’m so utterly fed up of the phrase “levelling up”. It has always been a meaningless and pointless term thrown around by politicians in response to literally everything, to try and make the peons believe their towns won’t be completely and utterly forgotten about.
Anyone who lives in the North knows that it’s just business as usual, nothing has changed, nothing ever will. Same old broken Britain.
As someone who regularly works on hs2 sites I can safely say they are ran by absolute fucking morons and there is too much pointless bureaucracy and red tape.
I once sat in my van for 2 solid weeks on night shift, getting paid 280 quid each night ( so my company was probably charging at least 800 a night) all to do 2-3 hours worth of actual work. None of the cunts there knew what they were doing. None of them wanted to make a decision. And the lack of communication was staggering.
And I wasn’t the only contractor on “downtime”.
Of course the Guardian newspaper believes that the North = Andy Burnham’s Manchester and surrounding areas. Since when did levelling up come to mean ‘whatever the big cities want’?
Folk who live in the shires and small towns who voted Tory for the first time in 2019 were hardly clamouring for a faster train link to London. If train travel came up at all in my area there was more of a desire to see improvements to Northern Rail than anything else.
Any decent government would have this done. Link it with HS1 and the Chunnel with larger loading gauges that better comply with Europe and then freight will be easier to transport and allow for higher speeds and capacity for passenger.
Durham council was rejected funding for a few million to improve rural railway links. It wouldn’t be beneficial enough.
Yet numbers of actual people who’d benefit would be almost equal to what HS2 phase 1 would benefit.
However the BIG difference is no Tory party doners would be invovled in that rural railway improvement scheme.
I saw the Sun is calling HS2 a woke project. Can someone please explain to me in detail how a railway line can be woke? Also, is my kitchen counter woke, I just don’t know, everything’s waking and I don’t know what to do send help
It was never a real thing. Leveling up was always empty rhetoric .
From day 1 they should have been forced to start in the north, I bet I could guarantee you it would have been done on budget and finished on time. But then again it was never going to be done within budget, too many backhanders and Tory landowners filling their pockets by inflating the cost of their land. Leveling up, let’s face it, it’s never going to happen. This country is FUBAR’D!
Where was all this outrage when the Leeds leg of HS2 was axed?
Scrap it and give what ever money is left to fund the NHS.
“Levelling Up” was always a defecto political spin doctors term for a vacuous policy that had no basis in reality, much like Tony Blair’s “Third Way” (or 🎶Things can only get better🎶), Cameron’s “Hug a Hoody”, Theresa May’s “no deal is better than a bad deal” and Sunaks “unprecedented” covid support unless you were one of 3.8Million Self Employed.
But, Governments will always support expensive White Elephants, including “National Programme for IT” (Labour 1997-2010).
As long as this Clown outfit is in power I think you can forget the levelling up laddos.
Levelling up was always bullshit. For decades, governments have cared about London and the Home Counties only. Nowhere else in the UK matters. Until we get federalism, nothing will change. As it is, all HS2 will do is turn Birmingham into a suburb of London. Can’t wait 🙄
Rishi need to shift some cash to his rich mates. They are the only ones who will be levelling up.

Improve housing and provide training and job access. Why are towns like Blyth being [given pittances](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/blyth-northumberland-levelling-up-money-27305580) whilst the good ol’ Tories and good ol’ Burnham are wanting to piss more billions away on a train that gets you from London to mini-me London a bit faster?
