[According to Lithuanian aviation museum he did not use the opportunity to eject trying to prevent potential casualties.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFgG5PtzkSI) He was supposed to fly the first manned Buran space shuttle to space as a pilot and commander of the space craft. Afaik some of the footage of the Buran you can see him flying along side the shuttle landing autonomously. He never got to go to space.
