  1. The article is a bit business-y, here is the actual law:

    https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A32023R1115

    In simple terms, for:

    > palm oil, soya, wood, cocoa, coffee, cattle and rubber

based-products, companies need to find out if the resources are produced sustainably, all the way down their logistic chains, down to the original producer.

There are hefty fines if the rules are not respected, so there is a strong incentive for example for European importers or companies producing these things even abroad, to respect the law.

    Quotes from the article:

    > it goes beyond just the main suspects, [i.e.,] the commodities themselves, it really goes much further, much further.”

    > The operators importing the products could potentially make steps […] to support small and medium enterprises abroad to comply; they will have to, in a way, because **they need to ensure that the whole supply chain is deforestation free**.

This is precisely the kind of regulation that can start the [Brussels effect](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brussels_effect). It’s great news for environment protection and the fight against climate change.
