  1. Excerpt:

“American military assess the effectiveness of the counteroffensive not based on comments in social media and newspapers, but rather on the realities on the battlefield. They understand that what the Ukrainian Defense Forces have achieved in both the south and the east is a true military miracle, considering all the circumstances, such as minefields and Russia’s air dominance.

Therefore, there was no criticism of the speed of the counteroffensive. On the contrary, there was a very substantive discussion on how to address the challenges faced by the Defense Forces so that the soldiers can move forward even more effectively,” Kuleba said.

  2. Part of life in a free society is that you hear all the criticism and debate over some issue out in the open, in public. When American generals (or anyone really) say things like, “Ukraine should be sending more of its armor to widdershins at high noon,” or whatever, they are not necessarily saying, “Ukraine sucks” or “the Ukrainian army is doing it all wrong.” They are offering their constructive opinion.

And of course you get 10 retired generals in a room and you’ll get 11 opinions.

Discussion, debate, and disagreement don’t mean disloyalty. That’s a Putin thing. Neither Ukraine nor its friends around the world need any of that Putin bullshit.

If history is any guide, those of us around today will be hearing these debates long after the war is won. For the rest of our lives. Long may the words flow. In the meantime, Ukraine’s commanders on the ground can and will continue to adapt, and to incorporate whatever opinions they deem best into their operations. Which is all anyone in war can ever do.
