The real question is, how do you say 8:20?
In Romania we say:
* 8, half / 8 and a half
* 8, 30 / 8 and 30
We say ‘pol devet’.
Not quite true for Ukraine: “half nine” or “half of nine” but also “eight thirty” can be used. Or “twenty thirty”, only this way if it’s 8:30pm in 24h format.
What about 8:15?
I am curious, as in Hungarian 8:15 would be “quarter 9”, which fits nicely into the series “half 9” (8:30) and “3 quarter 9” (8:45). The rule being that the whole hour is always the next, even if we are closer to the last.
I am wondering if any other languages do this.
