  1. > Russia is “actively and constantly” jamming the GPS communications of ships in Romanian territorial waters, which is causing the risk of collisions, and Romania and NATO must prepare for a long-term confrontation with the Russian regime, Romanian Chief of Staff General Daniel Petrescu said Wednesday.

    > “War has returned to Europe. It’s a war of Russia’s choosing, which for Ukraine is a war of national survival and a fight for Western values. We do not see the end of this war now, and while we admire the resilience of Ukrainian society in the face of Russian attacks, we must also prepare for a long-term confrontation with the Russian Federation regime,” General Petrescu said in a statement, delivered in English, at the Euro-Atlantic Resilience Forum, organised in Bucharest by the Euro-Atlantic Resilience Centre.

    > General Petrescu’s speech can be watched from minute 05:30.

    > “We feel this confrontation very much in particular on NATO’s Eastern flank and especially in the region where they come from, the Black Sea. The Russian Federation’s war in Ukraine has fundamentally destabilised the Black Sea region, and caused feelings of insecurity among the countries bordering it, with repercussions on the security environment,” said Daniel Petrescu, speaking live from Washington.

    > The head of the Romanian army said that “the Black Sea has become an area of military operations for Russia”.

    > “From here, missiles are fired at Ukraine, at its civilian or military infrastructure. The region has become the scene of increasingly frequent military action, with maritime incidents and actions restricting the free movement of ships. Just last night, anti-aircraft alarms sounded in Ukrainian towns near the Romanian border, warning of imminent attacks. But such things don’t just happen in Ukraine: alert messages warning of possible falling objects in the airspace are frequently sent to Romanian citizens living in the Delta, close to Ukrainian ports which are constantly under Russian attack,” Petrescu said.

    > These attacks have become “the new normal” and “the war in Ukraine will continue to generate regional instability and security risks for Romania and the region”, said General Petrescu.

    > “There is a constant risk associated with the increasing likelihood of incidents at the NATO border caused by the possibility of certain drones or missiles misfiring. Romania’s infrastructure or merchant ships in (Romania’s) territorial waters could be hit by accident,” said Daniel Petrescu.

    > Another danger highlighted by the Romanian army chief is the drifting sea mines in the Black Sea.

    > The four-star general of the Romanian army argued that Romania will have, in this context, to have an approach that will lead to “increasing the resilience” of Romanian society in the face of new threats, through support of the population “towards NATO and the US in particular”, the presence of NATO troops in Romania, the budget allocated to defence, the development of national defence programmes and the interoperability with the US military of weapons systems such as Himars, Patriot, F-16 or Piranha vehicles.

  2. Romania should really invest in the navy, with state of the art ships as well as electronic warfare/countermeasures.

A land attack from Russia is not a real danger, if Ukraine holds out, but the sea is where Russia can cause headaches, including for the oil fields. What happens if a drifting mine hits one of the oil rigs?

  3. This is the first time in my life I feel protective of Romania. We stand together…! The Russians could be exporting their culture, invite us as tourists, modernise, but instead all they have to offer is this bullshit.

  4. They’ll prepare to shout “pac pac” as the Russians come in.

-context: apparently due to training ammo shortages, if they go on tactical exercises the officers make them shout “pac pac” [bam bam] lieu of actually shooting-

  5. So another aggression against NATO member met with nothing but fear and cowardice from NATO. Sooner or later Russians will be confident bombing and doing whatever else they please all border zones since since it is clear that NATO will kept bending backwards in prefer to do nothing about it
