  1. *The government of Estonia has supported a proposal for the latest (twelfth) EU sanctions package with a complete ban on trade with Russia.*

*Source: European Pravda, citing [Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna](https://twitter.com/Tsahkna/status/1707355973495529596?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1707355973495529596%7Ctwgr%5Ef187e807c196cc2ae7d6b1fd548121bd3077fd42%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.eurointegration.com.ua%2Fnews%2F2023%2F09%2F28%2F7170385%2F)*

*Details: Tsahkna said Tallinn is proposing that the EU introduce a full trade embargo against Russia, as well as blocking the transit of goods already sanctioned by the EU.*

*”Business with Russia fuels its war machine,” the minister added.*

*There are reports in the media that in October, EU member states may start discussing a new package of sanctions against Russia – the twelfth one so far – due to its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.*

*It is known that restrictions on the Russian diamond trade, set to be introduced by the G7, may be announced earlier in the new round of sanctions.*

*The package may be adopted in the first half of October or announced during the EU-US summit scheduled for the same month.*

*”Russia continues to commit war crimes and barbaric acts in Ukraine,” she told journalists. “That is why trade with Russia must end. We are seeking to impose a complete trade embargo on Russia as well as significant restrictions on transit to third countries. We must also keep working to limit the money Russia is making from energy. Likewise, it is important that frozen Russian assets remain frozen until the country pays its war reparations in full.”*

  2. While unlikely to happen, the notion seems more than apt by now.I am aware sanctions are supposed to use the ratchet effect, but the twelfth package?

Maybe at the 15th package in 2026 at this rate.

  3. At this point it’s probably more effective to begin adding tolls or even sanctions on countries helping Russia evade the sanctions.

  4. I support this but many people wrongly think that embargo means a naval blockade which they would find too escalatory.

Please call it a “complete ban on all EU trade with Russia”.

  5. Estonia IS the one to talk:

    > Trade with other countries neighboring Russia has rather increased during the war in Ukraine and sanctions as well. In all, total exports to Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan in the first seven months of the year have increased 26.5 percent compared with the same period in 2021, reaching €601 million

Estonian businesses have effectively increased its trade with Russia during the war through its neighbours. If the blockade means “exports to Russia with extra steps”, then there isn’t much use to it besides posturing.
