  1. > Highlighting that power available to senior Garda management, Ms McEntee said she had been “assured” the same number of gardaí would be on duty on Halloween at the end of the month as last year. There would also be “sufficient” Garda resources to deal with anticipated violent protests outside the Dáil Éireann on budget day on Tuesday week.

What violent protests are expected? Surprised I haven’t heard anything about that

  2. So which is it, she can or she can’t intervene? Cause I don’t think Helen knows herself.

  3. I’m pretty sure that the Gardai can’t pick and choose who is directed to do overtime. It’s a case of an entire district having to be directed together.
Also pretty sure you have to give them 14 days notice of this.
I guess that counts the budget out..
Maybe Helen should actually look at some policies in the guards before interfering/not interfering/ whatever she’s at this hour.

  4. Yeah, and a Minister can be ‘directed’ by the Electorate to be really effective at their job.

  5. Don’t know the details but presume this is the worst thing you could say to people wanting to go on strike. We will force you to work.

  6. They can be directed to work but those who are out sick can’t be directed to work. This is one sure fire way to see more gardai calling in sick than those who were going to do so. Those on duty can be told to work past the end of their shift but doing so may see those members feeling sick and having to leave.
