Hey guys I just got to my dorm in Germany and I’m trying to get wifi but I dont see any Ethernet ports in my room, landlord says it should be one near the plugs (see image below) but I don’t know what that is, I got the TP-Link TL-WR841N N300 WLAN router and no cable in the box looks like that, what cable should I get or what the hell should I do. Thanks!

  1. OMG. You don’t connect to “the internet”, that connects to the pony express… 😀

That’s an old [TAE Connector](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TAE_connector) ^^^^wiki – you can try to find an old modem with 56k or ISDN at best at 64kb/s …

PS: what’s the thing to its right? not visible in the picture.

  2. Well, yeah. This router is not DSL capable. It does not have an internal DSL modem.

Buy literally any other router with DSL capabilities. That one will come with the right cable for you to plug in.

  3. that’s an old ISDN connection box (TAE), i hope you have a DSL contract already.

first of all before trying to use the internet you should have a contract with one of the providers, do you have an active contract? if so they usually send you a router and a technician that sets everything up for you if you’re not experienced with that.

also that’s a really cheap router does it even have its own dsl modem? i doubt that this will work, you need a regular router, a fritzbox for example

  4. You’ll need to have a provider connect that to your house’s APL and get a DSL connection on that. Then you use a matching modem to connect to your router and input the PPPoE credentials your provider gave you into that. Sometimes you’ll need to specify VLAN 7, but most modems nowadays set that automatically anyway.

Or do what most people in Germany do: get a Fritzbox with an inbuilt modem. I hate them with a fiery passion, but for some reason everybody seems to love them.

  5. Get a Fritzbox. That‘ll solve your problems, and more.
