It’s clearly going to be a massive problem but we’re going to need more persuading than that. If I can barely afford to live now, how can I support a child? With the way everything appears to be going, why would I want to inflict that on someone new?
I’m very happy for anyone who wants to have children but I do feel like raising a family is no longer the default, at least in my circles.
For decades people have been shamed for daring to have children when they don’t have the financial means to cover all scenarios for said child.
Now we’re in a situation where many are financially struggling to get by without kids.
No bloody wonder many aren’t having kids.
Make existing more affordable and people might consider it.
Sounds like a pyramid scheme. At some point we won’t have the resources/space to sustain population growth. What then?
Why would I bring a child into this world?
Impending global apocalypse, increasing right wing rhetoric, poor economic performance…
How about the Government pays for the extra children then? We aren’t all flush with cash like the Torries.
Fine. Make it so people can buy a good quality home in their 20s.
*touches earpiece*
Oh i’m hearing the old people who own all the houses and vote for you don’t like that idea.
Yeah… No. No amount of money would persuade me to birth a child and then be stuck with it and raise it for the next 18 years or who knows for how long. Risk serious complications from childbirth, etc. No, thank you.
They make us poorer every day, they tell us not to ask for help, they tell us not to have kids we can’t afford.
Then when we stop having kids they’re all “Wait not like that.”
Well, either care is paid for by the family in terms of practical care or it’s paid for by the government/taxes. Other options?
Aging population should have fostered a country in which having a child seems like an appealing prospect for young people. This goes both ways
Where am I going to put my mum to care for her? In the cupboard of my 1 bed studio?
It is truly wonderful watching us child-free lot dismantle the entire system.
This is just testament to the absolute knotted shitshow that is Tory policy of the past 50 years – also known as “terminal cynicism”.
I thought we weren’t meant to have kids we “couldn’t afford”?
I thought claiming “benefits” in relation to anything, let alone the supposedly “vital” childbearing, was the activity of the lazy scrounger unwilling to work?
I thought it was “our own fault” that we can’t afford private medical treatment, childcare, private schooling, additional tutoring, and social mobility required to get those kids into the social circles and education institutions required to succeed in this country?
But now Jenrick wants everyone to have children – why?
We can’t afford them.
Apparently we can’t raise them, as Tories think we are the most feckless and work shy in the world.
It seems we can’t educate them, because according to the Tories we’re all mindless woke members of the mob only interested in cancel culture and not “proper British history” like all the war crimes and plundering.
Coming from a man who took a £12,000 donation to the party in exchange for writing off a £40million tax bill.
The man is even shit at corruption – he’s a walking joke.
Which is why they trot him out to legitimize the white supremacist conspiracy theories.
How about invest in quality elderly care and stop private institutions raping our wallets.
Fucking stupid cunt.
God forbid you are related to someone with a serious illness like dementia, care costs are abysmal.
More like you just want more cheap future labour in your warehouses and factories. Tough shit arseholes. Reap what you sow. People are wising up.
May be they should help with child care costs then considering it costs a small fortune.
Start by creating an environment that creates a feeling of excitement when having children instead of neverending worries, frustration and massive financial burden. I don’t trust the politicians, I don’t trust the Police, education seems worse than ever and everything is super expensive = no children.
There’s also a bit of a bigger issue here, while having more children would fix the issue temporarily. It’s basically just kicking the can down the road.
Because when that generation become our ageing population, who takes care of them? We’re stuck in a cycle where we constantly need more and more workers but doing so ends up inevitably increasing our aging population down the line.
It seems like we need to change how we do things, some things look like they need to be automated instead of being handled by people.
“We’re going to vote for policies that make it impossible for you to earn enough to live and have children. And we’re going to vote against any policies that might make it possible for you to have anywhere to live so that our own house prices can go up. And we’re going to spend decades demonising anyone who might want to move to this country and help support our economy.”
“We really wish you wouldn’t”
“Tough shit. Wait! Why is there no one left to wipe my arse for me now that I’m old?”
You couldn’t pay me to have children. I don’t like kids and I’m not cut out to be a parent. They will frankly ruin my life.
Hilarious. As if they haven’t made it increasingly more difficult, thankless and expensive for the past 15 years.
Tories: asset strip the country, never investing, ignoring problems at best or actively making them worse.
Society: starts to break down.
Tories: Pikachu face!
They’d rather import millions as it’s cheaper and let housing costs go up so most families can’t afford kids.
The inverse correlation between standard of living and birthrate is one of the problems we must solve sooner, rather than later.
We are less than 5 years away from fully autonomous humanoid robots.
The first application of these bots will likely be the care sector.
It’s amazing that the government doesn’t properly research the advances in AI and robotics, considering how it will have a direct impact on the jobs market in the near future.
They still think this is science fiction, despite the fact some of the leading tech companies have not only working prototypes, but the manufacturing experience and budgets to mass produce these products.
We should be having less children, not more.
People can’t afford houses, The ones that can can’t afford not to work to pay for their massive mortgages?
If they do have kids, they wouldn’t be able to pay for childcare because of the massive mortgages?
People can’t afford to have children because of the housing market!
Fix that & people start having children again!
We adopted, and decided against a second adoption partly based on the finances – parental leave, part time work, nursery costs, after-school clubs etc all quickly add up.
Dealing with declining populations will be one of the most significant economic issues of the next 50 years.
Due to economic hardships and cultural changes people are having less children and living longer. The retirement age is going to go up *a lot*.
We’re in our early thirties. Our friends who have had kids/planning on kids, have only had the ONE child. They can’t afford another right now and may never have another.
We’re only planning one… and that’s in a few years when we HOPE to have better salaries.
If the Government wants us to have any children/ additional children, they need to increases wages and make renting or owning your own home affordable. But that will never happen. They don’t care.
If you’re young and skilled enough get the fuck out of this country while you can, let it burn
