The Soviet Union was a socialist confederation, that’s why they used red. The Nazis were on the other side of the spectrum, but also used a bit of red.

Yes part of the stated goals are overcoming capitalism and towards democratic socialism, basically the same theories that brought the Soviet Union and DDR but without people disappearing and against militarism
