The Croatian Air Force has officially received its first Dassault Rafale fighter jet from France. NATO member received its first Rafale fighter jet out of the 12 it had bought as part of the modernization of its Air Force.
The delivery ceremony took place at the Mont-de-Marsan Air Base of the French Air and Space Force (Armée de l’air et de l’espace).
The Croatian Defense Minister Mario Banožić, Deputy Prime Minister Tomo Medved, Head of the Prime Minister’s Office Zvonimir Frka-Petešić, and Chief of General Staff of the Republic of Croatia Robert Hranj attended the ceremony.
The French delegation included representatives of the Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defense of the French Republic, headed by the Inspector of the Armed Forces for Combat Aviation, General Luc de Rancourt.
In May 2021, the Croatian government decided to purchase 12 used multirole combat aircraft Rafale F3-R and associated logistics support from France for 999 million euros ($1.05 billion), following an international tender. The lifespan of the Soviet-made MiG-21 aircraft currently operated by the Croatian Air Force will expire in 2024.
A further five Rafales would arrive in Croatia by the beginning of the second quarter of 2024, defence minister Mario Banozic said in a separate press release on Sunday.
