  11. American journalists generally suck at pushing back at idiocy, and frankly this doesn’t go nearly far enough. Do you research, be more specific. When he says he ‘hasn’t seen evidence’ of Putin killing opponents, demand an explanation why Navalny thinks Putin tried to kill him. How he tricked a GRU guy to admit on the phone that they’d done it and how they did it. Is that some elaborate US-German-whoever conspiracy to frame Putin? (that the Russians were somehow in on as well, given he was hospitalized in Russia too) And if so, why are they keeping him in prison? (and on the bullshit grounds of missing his parole hearing because he was in a German hospital) Why is Kara-Muza in jail? Why are they arresting -on video -people holding up “no war” signs or even just blank pieces of paper? Why’s Peskov out there saying “electons are unneccesary, really” It’s _absurd_ to pretend Russia’s not outright totalitarian at this point. If Stone made “Platoon” in Russia today about (say) the Afghan conflict, he’d be in jail for “discrediting the armed forces” – is he okay with that?

    These Putin apologists know nothing of Russia and/or have no intellectual honesty whatsoever. Unfortunately, American journalists also – for the most part – know nearly nothing of Russia and fall too easily into the trap of reinforcing the conspiracy theorist’s mindset that it’s all the USA-vs-Russia and what the USA and US media claim about Russia vs what Putin says about Russia. Instead of taking an alternate perspective like the Ukrainians, the liberal democrats among Russians, or third-countries like (say) Finland.

    Anyway, what a damn idiot. It’s “too simplistic” to say Putin’s a dictator who kills his enemies? Sometimes reality is simple. Yet somehow it’s not “too simplistic” to act like Ukrainians have no brains or agency of their own, and nor does most of Europe, or Australia, New Zealand, Japan and other countries that support Ukraine. They just do what the US tells them to, apparently.

  16. Although this interview is from 2017, there is no reason to think that Stone has changed his opinion. Unfortunately, the people of Ukraine have to suffer as a result of his blindness on this point.

    But what is truly important is how Putins government can afford to build thousands of new arms like missiles and drones. Guess who is funding the Russian govt, China (#1) and the EU (#2) by buying Billion$ in fossil fuels from Russia. A June 2023 report on Russia fossil fuel sales showed the world is sending about $445 Million a Day to Putin’s govt/regime coffers.

    Speaking of simple explanations, this is a big one. They can’t believe their eyes when geopolitics is “simple” so they either invent conspiracy theories, try to reach back 50 years in history, try to find every good russian or bad ukranian so they feel like they “really understand” more than the common man. Quite a few academics including mearshimer have taken this tack, refusing to believe that putin tried to take kyiv (it was a diversion!) or that
    they want to annex what they’ve claimed to annex (more than the donbass). They’ve made a living finding hidden truths that are sometimes real or at least catalyst or factor in global events. Naked aggression actually undermines their life’s work.
