  1. Better pay, better jobs, better benefits in other sectors.

*”But why can’t we find people for our forces”*

  2. And teachers, and gards, and nurses.
What the fuck is the point of this country being “wealthy” if the government can’t even ensure that our most important core public services can hold onto staff and provide a meaningful service

  3. I know people in the military, its not an amazing salaried job, in a time with mass staff shortages you can make more on a building site or factory with less restrictions on lifestyle than the armed forces. the only benefit they can kind of compete on now is the fact they offer housing. according to the person I know, moral is very low, more people are leaving, few are joining, irish army veterans are pretty valuable and desired abroad and at home

  4. We really don’t need a defence force, it’s like having a wall of lolly sticks to stop a lava flow

  5. This type of article pops up every few months and still nothing has been done.
I personally know plenty of naval service personnel that have applied to medical device and pharmaceutical companies and they got jobs and the companies have even paid the ‘buy out’ fee. They are on double what the naval service offered and a better life. Some stay in the naval service but they have said morale is completely gone so it doesn’t surprise me.
