FIFA ends total ban on Russian football teams

  1. FIFA on Wednesday ended its blanket ban on Russian football teams competing in international tournaments, in a decision set to provoke renewed outcry from Ukraine’s Western allies.

The global governing body said it would once again allow Russian youth teams to participate in the men’s and women’s under-17 World Cup tournaments since expelling all Russian teams in February 2022, after the start of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

FIFA’s move follows a similar decision last week from UEFA, European football’s governing body, relating to continental club competitions. That choice triggered a backlash around Europe with several countries saying they won’t play against Russian teams despite UEFA’s ruling.

Ukraine’s football federation said last week that it “will not take part in any competitions with the participation of Russian teams, and appeal to other UEFA member associations to boycott possible matches with the participation of teams from the Russian Federation, subject to their admission.”

Conditions will be imposed on Russian teams by FIFA, including playing under the name “Football Union of Russia” rather than “Russia,” and not having their national flag, anthem or colors on display at matches.

In a statement, FIFA said it “reiterated its condemnation of Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine.”

  2. Seems like all sports orgs are open to selling out to any authoritarian shithole like SA or China, so not surprising

  3. FIA, FIFA proved a lot of time they are corrupt organizations, what federation is next ?

  4. How can FIFA do something without the consent of Europe and the USA if it has offices and employees in these countries?

If Western countries are against such decisions, why don’t they impose sanctions against those who implement them?

P.S. In general, the sanctions of 2022-2023 are some kind of Kafkaesque absurd.

Manufacturers of Western machine tools have stopped supplying machine tools to Russia due to sanctions…

But this does not apply to already concluded contracts…

    Deliveries to Rosatom…

And subsidiaries of Russian businesses in post-Soviet countries…

Because of this, the machine tools (NSH) purchased in 2022 will now be used to assemble drones for attacks on Ukraine, and then, probably, Western countries where were these machines created, that Russia threaten since 2014…

All this is even more absurd than the Western industrialization of the USSR in the 1920s, which took place under direct statements that industrialization would be used for the production of weapons and conquer those who help to carry it out, in the context of the “World Communist Revolution.”

  5. Russian here.

Good to see FIFA come to its senses. Because Putin doesn’t give a shit whether Russia plays football or not. But the random Russian footballers do, and they get punished regardless of whether they are for or against the war. Not to mention this is an under-17 World Cup. How exactly is a 15-year-old or a 16-year-old responsible for what Putin is doing?

  6. LOL, why am I not surprised? FIFA is perhaps the most corrupt sporting organization ever.

  7. Fuck you! I will boycot. Won’t watch this corrupt shit. Slava Ukraini!

  8. I will not end my personal total ban on any FIFA related business.

  9. Time to start a new federation. FIFA can manage russia, china, n korea, iran. Good luck.

  10. Boycott these motherfuckers then, vote with your wallet this is all these assholes care about

  11. Genuine question, why ban them in the first place?

  12. FIFA – honestly a useless Paramus scheme – money in – nothing out, or in this case, worse

  13. Now they just need to find a team that won’t boycott the match against Russia
