  1. The integration of former communist countries is still in progress, can they afford this kind of money for Ukraine? The only possible scenario is Germany paying up.

  2. In return, gaining access to:

    1. One of the most combat-ready army in Europe.
    2. Vast agricultural lands.
    3. ??? Under the USSR geological exploration of Ukrainian soil was quite modest and after USSR there was no money for it. But even so were found quite large reserves of uranium, rare metals, oil, titanium, nickel, cobalt, etc.
    4. A population with one of the most postmodern national self-identifications – self-organization (social traditions began to form since the Cossacks times). Social traditions of dynamic decentralized socialization, flat organization structures, modularity and so on will be quite useful for Europe and EU. Especially before EU reforms which are inevitable, structure of the European Union is a product of the 20th century, not the 21st.

  3. I mean microsoft is acquiring activision for like 77 billion…. If a single video game company can be worth that much, 189 billion for Ukraine EU accession isn’t something astronomical.

  4. Doesn’t matter if it’s 186 or 2186, there is no other option but to take them in ASAP for the simple reason that Ukraine that was strung along then left to its own devices is a potential source for all kinds of calamities.

One example: I don’t see anyone mention this issue, because nobody wants to paint Ukrainians as, even potential, bad guys, but if you think we can tell hundreds of thousands of combat veterans who fought for a better future “Good luck out there, lmao.” and keep the consequences of their disgruntlement outside of EU, you’re dreaming.
Our politicians have a vested interest in accepting Ukraine into EU and rebuilding it as quickly as possible to, if for no other reason, avoid taking an FPV drone to the forehead in a few years, when they announce a campaign against the unprecedented explosion in organised crime.

  5. In grand strategic terms, 190b is not that much. Its around 1/50th of the EUs annual GDP in a bad year

  6. That would not be the accession cost, just the amounth of grants they would get in 7 years.

    The real article:

    > Ukraine’s accession to the EU would entitle Kyiv to about €186bn over seven years, according to internal estimates of the union’s common budget, turning “many” existing member states into net payers for the first time.
