  1. Homosexuality has been decriminalized in the African country of Mauritius after the country supreme court struck down it’s anti-sodomy law

“In its judgment, delivered on Wednesday, the Supreme Court emphasised that Mauritius is a secular state, finding no justifiable reason for the state to intrude into the private lives of LGBTIQ+ individuals.

The judges further acknowledged that the plaintiff’s sexual orientation is “natural and innate… cannot be altered and is a natural variant of his sexuality.”

  2. That’s great news. I do wonder how many lgbt people are there though.
Edit: apparently there are 1.2M people on that island, so a few thousands are likely, at the very least. Good for them.

  3. Good to see the Mauritius Supreme Court rule that the law targeting LGBT people is unconstitutional.

  4. Not LGBT myself, but I delight at seeing headlines like this. Respect for consensual sexual relationships between adults, of whatever gender they may be, is the first step towards equality. Same goes with reports about gay marriage legalized, that’s a positive sign for the overall rights of a country.

  5. I’m usually pretty good with geography and I have never heard of this country lol

  6. It sure was just about got damn time, if you ask me. Gotta love it to see it, man.

  7. I have never heard of this place.

Edit: just googled it! Holy heck, it looks gorgeous! Who wants to go to Mauritius with me?!

  8. Phew no longer need a prescription for medicinal homosexuality

  9. As a brit I hope this helps the legal and public opinion case to transfer the chagos islands to mauritius. It’s very easy for people to make the case against decolonisation when post colonial nations have illiberal laws.

  10. There was an old science fiction movie about this: “Mauritius Needs Women”.
