Letter is coming back undeliverable, no such person at this address.
Of all the things that will never happen this will never happen the most.
Republicans just as likely to elect Nancy Pelosi as Speaker
You know who fascist love to put in charge? Moderates…
I’m wondering if this could actually fly if democrats agreed in writing to allow half of the committees be headed by republicans
The media really lives in a bubble, tbh, the so called “moderate” Republicans left the stage somewhere in 2014 and have only gone extinct by this point (the closest thing to one left was Romney, and even he’s not at all one, technically speaking- gone too).
McCarthy is already no moderate, and to the far Right, but the most “moderate” they were willing to go: there’s no chance Rs will listen to Ds when they were angry at him FOR being too willing to broker deals with Ds.
I’m as liberal as they come, and this journalist has to be a joke.
Is it April already?
These “moderate” Republicans don’t exist- they vote lockstep with MAGA- there is now the MAGA and Ultra MAGA wings of the party
That’s not happening.
Doubt this will happen, but fully support having a POC in the position over yet another white person
Why would republicans elect a democrat as leader lol?
I’m no Steve Kornacki, but what would be the minimum number of Republicans to vote for Jefferies? They will just have to find three ghosts to visit them in the middle of the night and scare them into voting. What’s that like 24 ghosts?
Unfortunately there’d be a much better chance of this if the minority leader were an old white man rather than a Black man named Hakeem.
In what possible fantasy world does anyone with any political brain think this could or would happen? And I say that as a proud Dem.
If the Dems wanted to flex any kind of power here, they’d find the half-dozen or so vulnerable republicans in districts where Biden won—Republicans who *need* to look moderate and bipartisan in order to have a good shot at re-election—and offer them a deal. Basically, get those moderate GOPers to agree on one of themselves to be Speaker, and offer the Dems to back that person in exchange for certain power-sharing agreements and promises to put up certain Dem priorities to a vote (Ukraine funding, rape kit testing, etc…).
That, realistically, is the best possible scenario the Dems can hope for, and even that’s unlikely, because any GOPer who “betrays their party” runs the risk of losing both donor support and financial support from the national GOP for the 2024 election cycle.
I have a better chance of winning today’s Powerball which there is only a 1 in 292 million chance of happening.
Zero chance of a dem speaker. It’s more likely that a few right-ish leaning Dems will make a deal to join the majority of republicans for a slightly more moderate republican speaker.
The one thing I do like about this genre of writing is that it implicitly reinforces the “there are no moderate Republicans” angle.
That line of attack should get pushed more.
Serious Question: Is the GOP really a party if they can’t form a majority to elect a Speaker? Is there any case for Democrats to have Jefferies placed as Speaker for winning the most votes (without an actual majority of the House). The Constitution says the House must select a Speaker and that is about all it says on the matter AFAIK.
And now back to reality where said ‘moderate’ Republicans are just fine and dandy to just keep the gavel in McHenry’s hands.
There are some moderate Republicans, but I’m doubtful that they would ever support Jeffries. Maybe pick a compromise candidate instead. I remember suggestions for Cheney. But any Republican who hates Trump would probably work. Pick someone who would compromise with Democrats, wants the government open, but would make moderate Republicans happy.
A lesser of a traitor type you mean..
Have you seen his skin color? No fucking chance GOP vote for him. They would lose support from all the Nazis, like 10% of their base!
Message to ‘moderate’ Republicans: Make Hunter Biden’s laptop speaker
Every commenter here is an expert on every district.
Even the GOP reps who impeached Trump wouldn’t dare to do that, if they were still around.
The GOP could just blame him for “insert topic here”, feel good about it, while Jeffries gets stuff done?
A) There are no “moderate” Republicans in Congress.
B) Even the slightly-less-than-pants-crapping-insane Republicans know that if they cast a vote for a black Democrat, they’ll end up like Tommy Lee Jones at the end of Natural Born Killers.
Republicans from Biden districts need to find a centrist candidate that would cut off the freedumb/MAGA crazies and work with Dems. Not run a dem agenda but real collaboration and debate. Rewrite the house rules for the term, dump the sham investigations, pass a budget, work on a border security/Ukraine funding package, etc. Hell they don’t need anyone in the current house, have Liz Cheney do it or some other respectable republican that’s not MAGA.
Only way this happens is if the Democrats could convince the 5 Rs from NY – who will probably lose their seats in the next election – to switch parties. Then we could have George Santos as Speaker and our timeline would be complete.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, seen here counting how many Republicans will vote for him…
>Message to ‘*moderate*’ Republicans
AH HAHAHA. HA. ‘Moderate.’ Ha…
What moderate Republicans?
Here’s another idea… 11 of you become Independents…. Don’t vote for the Republican party.
There are no “moderate” Republicans.
The most hilarious part about all of this is that it would be in the GOP’s best interest to vote in Jeffries.
They have the majority in the House. Anything Jeffries brings to the floor, they can just go back to the ol’ rule book and stall/vote down forever and then go on to whine on news outlets that, once again, the government is broken and only they can fix it. They can literally set themselves up a potential scapegoat into an election year where voters on average will have the best recollection of recent events.
And they can’t even do that, or even conceive of it, because it’ll come off to their heavily cultivated base that it’s a sign of weakness to work with Dems, and not attempted political savvy like it has been in the past.
It’d be hilarious if it wasn’t so damned depressing and serious.
Republicans will never vote for a Democrat. Meghan McCain would be a name some Republicans could support and some Democrats might be able to stomach.
If the Republican party has split into an Ultra~Reich Wing and a Centrist Wing, why aren’t they now the minorities, no longer in a position to nominate a speaker? Shouldn’t the Democrats now be the majority?
Lol ok, like sure, the new confederate party is definitely going to have a black man as speaker
/s
It only takes six votes.
It will never happen. But that would be cool.
Cross the aisle?!? Heavens..
I like his personality, but reality is nothing would get done either. There needs to be an independent or moderate. They need to leave sharp social issues aside (not saying to compromise stance) and see what they can pass. Maybe start on wages issues, better salary for teachers, better programs for the disenfranchised. Just please no more talks saving rain forests for now
