  1. I’m curious to know how much they really think democrats should of bailed them out. Or whether it’s just a political excuse to their voters, blame Democrats is a core platform after all

  6. I do wonder what would have happened had McCarthy not broken his word to Democrats so often. If they trusted him even a tiny bit they could have extracted concessions (say on spending bills) to keep him as speaker, defanging the MAGA caucus and making progress toward properly avoiding a shutdown. Despite his weak position, all of that was in McCarthy’s control.

    Call your representative and let them know that you want them to fund social security, food assistance and other social programs not cut them. Let them know you want to protect a woman’s right to chose and to protect minorities and the LGBTQ communities from discrimination not make it legal. Tell them to stop campaigning through legislation and do there jobs. Call your state representatives and tell them the same thing.

  23. When McCarthy himself said that he will offer Demicrats nothing, well .. he gets nothing in return.

    If, only if, he promised and keep promises to stop the impeachment process against Biden, supported immediate funding for Ukraine, and brought to table a budget bill drafted jointly by the two parties, McCarthy would still be a speaker.

    The attempt to get a new Republican speaker, must, must, include these three if they want the support of the Democrats. Otherwise, let the Republicans wallow in the mud.

  26. I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but if they had waited until after a budget was passed then they could have voted him out later. It’s not like his party would simply give up on his ousting afterward.

  27. There was no point in saving him, because he’s so untrustworthy. And likely whoever goes back into the position won’t be all that different.

    From all the way back to McCarthy admitting Benghazi was just to hurt Hillary’s election chances, to bowing at the feet of Trump after Jan 6th and blaming Democrats ahead of a shutdown, what has he done to earn being saved by the opposition?

  29. Instead of offering Democrats something to vote him in as speaker McCarthy gave power to a bunch of wing nuts. Part of that power was allowing one member to file a discharge petition. Gates filed it when McCarthy worked with Dems on avoiding a shutdown. McCarthy had promised a clean budget to Dems after the debt ceiling fight but instead gave a 3 week CR at the 11th hour. But hey why did Dems do this

  32. The crux of this conflict is the underlying fact “conservative” policies might temporarily benefit rich capitalists but they never work otherwise. Conservative politicians require opposition to carry them through the lean times.

  40. Jesus that was hard to read, salon keeps going downhill in what they publish. For those that don’t want to waste ten minutes of their lives, the basic thesis is that republicans are small special needs children that can’t wipe their own butts while democrats are baby saving heroes that are national treasures. There are zero actual thoughts on the decision to not to save McCarthy, while mixed with some surprising sexism.

    In terms of the actual decision, at first I was in the camp that you don’t help your enemy while they are doing something stupid. But since the democrats own the other parts of government it’s surprising to me they didn’t stop this. It’s going to be a mess trying to sort this out – and meanwhile they can’t get anything else done. Maybe that’s a price they are willing to pay for the political gain hoping to have another unified government post ‘24.
