Because they want Putin’s help in electing Trump, again.
Because Democrats support Ukraine. Don’t overcomplicate it.
It’s a lot simpler than that. Putin is paying them
I never see this mentioned and it’s always funny to see liberals speculate about right wingers being bought off by Russians or claim whatever the Republicans are actually saying as if that’s the real reason. It would be nice if we could take people for their word, but we can’t today.
Russia has been the enemy of the right for most of my lifetime, so it makes sense to me to fund ways to cripple Russia via helping Ukraine as the enemy of my enemy is my friend theory.
But the anti Ukraine funding wing is about Biden corruption and vengeance for the “ Russia collusion” and Trump impeachment stuff. Those folks think that if Russia wins, more evidence will come out about Hunter Biden and Joe Biden corruption issues in Ukraine. They also think that’s why Joe Biden is trying to help Ukraine, to save his own ass, because he didn’t do much to help Ukraine during the initial Russian invasion starting in 2014.
And then when Trump was elected and tried to pressure Zelenskyy into announcing an investigation into Hunter Biden by withholding military aid, the impeachment was launched.
Anyway it’s an anti Biden and Trump payback move to support Russia by not supporting Ukraine in the same vein of enemy of my enemy is friend theory again. If liberal newspapers reported on this line of thinking then they’d have acknowledge Hunter Biden and Joe Biden Ukraine corruption concerns, and they won’t.
No Republicans I know like Russians, but they hate Ukrainians more and are willing to let Ukraine suffer so that Russia can do the dirty work of causing problems for Biden.
Granted I don’t know anyone who is that politically connected, but this is the scuttlebutt amongst people I know well and normally agree with politically. But I don’t on this issue and not enough to consider voting D any time soon.
Downvote away, but telling you my version of the this.
I haven’t been following Paul Krugman because for a long time I thought he was a hack and I only have so much time in life to allot for nonsense.
And to be fair, this is not the deepest thought anyone has ever had on this topic.
But I am still pretty impressed. I kept waiting for him to suddenly veer off into some completely wrong conclusion like he used to always do, and he didn’t.
As we used to say on Usenet, everyone gets a Fail to Suck Day. Today is Krugman’s. Maybe I’ll give him another chance.
It’s not hard to figure this out.
The MAGA voters do it because they’re absolute fucking morons who will cheer for whatever they think goes against what normal Americans think. They’re just contrarians to the point of suicide. Honestly, if any Democrat politician got on camera and said “don’t drink bleach!” you’d probably see news reports in the southern states of thousands of MAGA morons all poisoning themselves.
The politicians are a different class of MAGA moron. They’re doing it because their idiot voters demand it, and without those idiot voters they would be out of a job. They’re also hoping that if they suck Putin’s dick enough in public he’ll somehow fund their campaigns or fuck with the next election to keep them in their job and loyal to him.
Pretty dumb article. The maga leaders and news spreaders are getting bribed by Russia directly or indirectly to spread misinformation. It isn’t some BS political belief about authoritarianism.
Russia has positioned itself as a sort of block against postmodernism, against diversity, gays, globalism, americanism etc. And it’s said for a while that it will work with ‘conservative’ groups across the world to push back against all that. So in Iran that means the Mullahs. In Ukraine that meant “The Party of Region”, in the UK that meant Brexit, in the US that means the GOP.

And since Russia went to war with Ukraine, that *must* mean Ukraine represents postmodernism. And lo and behold the GOP folks who hate Ukraine claim that it’s a bunch of gay soldiers and rainbow flags or secret jewish cabal, etc.
A realistic answer? I think it’s a combo of factors:
1) Reflexively being against anything democrats and/or “establishment” republicans are for.
2) Fatigue from the decades long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, especially with how Afghanistan ended. A belief this will be another conflict that will drag on for years and years because we don’t have an accomplishable endgame.
3) Fear of debt/deficit unsustainability, and believing that long term, Europe should mostly foot the bill for a war in its own backyard rather than US should by increasing debt further. Just today we had an EU diplomat come out and say the EU will not pick up the slack if US support falters. These I think are reasonable concerns.
4) Eyes on China – they feel a conflict with China over Taiwan is imminent, Taiwan is a more core US concern, and the resources spent in Ukraine would hinder US ability to defend Taiwan.
5) General isolationism and America First – the belief the US can mostly withdraw from international conflicts and sit pretty in its homeland. This one I fundamentally disagree with.
6) Ideology – belief that China and neo-communist ideology is such a threat we should be trying to align Russia with us against them (And the belief that it is even possible to accommodate Russia’s new aggressive imperialist vision through peaceful means). I disagree that conflict can be avoided at this point. Current Russian ideology is incompatible with peaceful coexistence with the West. Even if we just allowed Ukraine to lose, Russia wants the nordics and the baltics. Failing to confront them now would lead to worse conflicts down the road.
The traitors betrayed the US by trying to burn the Constitution when they staged an insurrectionist coup attempt to try to stop the transfer of power. There is nothing the scum won’t betray.
