Why are we taking migrants from safe EU countries , unless they are coming via the visa system to pick up jobs in the economy and are self sufficient? Shouldn’t be on the taxpayer IMO.
This is related to the solidarity mechanism, it won’t actually stop people arriving.
Announcing we won’t be accommodating families arriving after X date is on the horizon.
Or maybe, just fucking maybe… we take all those people languishing in direct provision and train them up in sectors we have massive labour shortages in. Bus eireann has a chronic shortage of drivers, carers are another sector that badly needs people! Let’s get these people into paid employment, paying taxes, integrated into society and also fix the many problems we have as a nation!

The Common Travel Area is being discussed. It’s going to be problematic. If we are opting out of an EU scheme in order to preserve the borders of the UK then we as a strongly pro European state need to be very careful and vigilant that a process of detachment is not slid into public discourse.

To me this is about housing and urban planning as are a lot of issues in Ireland these days. We haven’t been building enough for years for the existing population and then external events fuck it up even. There is no way any politicians did not know something like this would happen but no party wanted to address the unpopular of urban planning and possibly causing people’s house prices to drop, far easier to make future generations pay for it but it was just kicking the can down the road. FG seems to defaulted to it as a problem solving solution.
Any more word on stopping the 220 payment to Ukrainians who are working full time? Absolutely unfair that a Ukrainian working 39 hours gets a 220 tax free boost to their wage.
If the idea is to integrate them stop making us pissed off with them, we’re only human, it’s unfair.

Invest in houses, schools and hospitals. Build some roads. Then there’ll be enough for everyone, and those feeling left behind in Ireland won’t object to new people coming.
