  1. It is utterly baffling that the US would support Russia

  2. Europeans have been relying way too much on U.S. for their own defense.
I hope our (European) politicians do understand that we need massive investments in defense.

The worst thing you can do in a fight is to almost kill your enemy. Because when it recovers, it will seek revenge but this time with experience and knowledge.
As history has shown in similar instances, the only way to prevent a war between Europe and Russia is massive militarization. To the point where potential attacker becomes aware of futility of its wishes.

  3. It wouldn’t be a problem if they’d move some of their budgeting into military spending. Europe has seen such success from the sacrifice of others throughout history, and today with the US’s military carrying them on their shoulders, it’s no different. I guess it’s time to think about imagining a future where the US is unable to continue helping them, Trump almost made that happen and there’s no guarantee that it’ll be resolved again the next time a nationalist psycho gets elected.

  4. If only anyone could have predicted this eventuality…

  5. They spent trillions buying Russian energy while multiple US presidents were warning about how they were building up Russia’s war machine and such. They can spent the same amount to support Ukraine.

  6. EU in the future will need to work with Russia and Ukraine, living in new long cold war is not an option, not for Russia, not for EU.

EU needs to strenghten its military and have their own policy, that is best for Europeans, if that coincides with USA interest cool, if not, also cool, the same goes for corporation with China, India, african countries or any other country around the world.

  7. The Europeans started the last two world wars but there’s been peace since they’ve been mostly disarmed and became American puppets.

It’s cheaper in the long run in lives and money if the US continues to pay for European defense. They get their socialist utopias and we get to avoid sending each generation to die in the mud solving their border disputes.

  8. Seeing the comments bashing the EU, I assume nobody have read the article.

  9. And they’re not gonna lift a finger until the borders of Germany/France are getting knocks by ork tanks.

Losing eastern Europe counts as a win for them, no more europoors to deal with.

What about when they are under siege? They’re gonna bitch and whine to the US to come back.

The union is a joke that needs reforming.

  10. Its less about money and more capability – the GMLRS / HIMARS is old school 90’s tech really but the fact that there is no euro equivilent in anything other then small handfulls is really telling.

  11. Time for them to give up a little bit of their healthcare too

  12. The reason Americans don’t have cheap healthcare is because of our military.

The reason Europeans have cheap healthcare is because of our military.

  13. I just wonder how many oligarchs are gonna appear from Ukraine after this war is over. Ukraine’s corruption is on par with Russian one. Fuck Russia

  14. America is really shooting its self in the foot, proving to be unreliable in this fight will only bolster the putins of the world and drive allies to move away from the USA, Europe may just go its own way if trump gains Office again

  15. Europeans: “America is bad. We don’t depend on America. If you say Europe depends on the US, it’s /r/shitamericanssay material!”

Also Europeans: “The US has a duty to protect us and intervene in European conflicts, and if they don’t, it means they’re unreliable, bad allies!”

  16. They can if they want to, in the medium term.

    They don’t want to.

  17. Damn maybe Ukraine should think about negotiating peace.

  18. That is not the United States’ issue. Let Europe fund it they can take on deficit spending.

  19. Of course they cannot, Europe is a social welfare utopia dependent on America to keep markets open and resources flowing to EU welfare paradises.

Europe would sooner let Ukraine fall than do anything to risk their welfare utopias.

If it’s between bullets and bread, they will choose bread.

  20. Europe can pay now or pay with everything later. Russia is not in bed with Iran and North Korea just for fun. Russia is not putting everything into their military just for fun. Russia decided to play empire.

  21. There will never be an end to war, only an end to us.

  22. How do they think they will manage if Putin gets his way and starts to take over Europe ?

  23. I like this old quote:

    > Hard times create strong men,
    strong men create good times,
good times create weak men, and
    weak men create hard times.

Europe letting America handle the heavier defense load while they focused on social programs under the incorrect assumption that war would never happen again, is a big part.

The 90s and onwards was the good times (created by strong men beforehand) and that created weak men (politicians) in Europe. Now these weak men are creating hard times. Eventually these hard times will create strong men in Europe but we ain’t there yet.

  24. Most of Europe can’t even fulfill their 2% GDP commitment to NATO, let alone doing more to help Ukraine.

  25. A shed load of cruise missiles might just help end this shit-fest. Taurus, Scalp and Storm Shadow in large numbers. Then the RU logistics are pretty much fucked so not so much need for the rest of the armaments

  26. There’s 21 fucking nations in Europe and they can’t fund their own defense?? What the fuck, guys

  27. Eu is just a big delusional shit. The better shit in the world, but still, shit.

  28. Just so you know the basic facts… first, the USA is the largest single contributor of support to Ukraine by a wide margin. The EU, however, has pledged more than twice as much, and that’s just what’s publicly known. If you say Europeans aren’t doing their part, you’re simply ignorant. However, it should also come as no surprise that the US contributions can’t be immediately replaced, or as the article says, ‘not fully’.

I would also like to remind you all that Putin didn’t attack Ukraine because he thought NATO was threatening – the fact that Russia has withdrawn the majority of their soldiers from NATO’s borders amply prove that – but instead he attacked Ukraine because he thought NATO was weak. Not in a physical sense, because it’s the most powerful alliance in the world and it’s not close. But because of *internal division*. It’s the only weapon Russia has that’s actually powerful.

Discord among us is what we don’t need more of. Do your part and support Ukraine instead.

  29. Lord knows this Country has shown the WORLD it’s leadership prowess over the last 250 years. We are as reliable as a Yugo with 200,000 miles on it. Let’s all drink a cup of bleach and shove a UV bulb up our asses and grab a crotch and buy some furniture on that note because all she wants to do is dance! 😃👍

  30. Fuck the narrative is changing, six months ago they wouldn’t dare write an article like this

  31. Have these European leaders consulted with European Reddit?
