tldr: The allegations are that “Santos’ fortune never existed at all” but “Santos mentally seduced” the treasurer of the RNCC into joining a scheme to put numbers where they were needed to make him qualify for campaign support, including a $500,000 personal check that never materialized.

So, I used to be a finance director for a Congress critter and am finding this fascinating. What he did was report donations and a loan to give the appearance his campaign had momentum which lead to the RCCC to add him to their top candidate list.
My old boss was a grassroots candidate that unexpectedly won his primary so we had to prove ourselves and to everyone’s surprise, we did and ended up on the DCCC’s red to blue list. It’s funny now that I think of it, things happened so fast, the home system ends up running on the honor system. I hope that changes where candidates will have to start providing bank statements to party operatives to verify what’s being said. We got the same issue with polling btw.
