Nordic literature Nobels

  1. Includes yesterday’s winner, Jon Fosse of Norway. Possible reasons for the size of the disparity:

    1. The Nobel is (unsurprisingly) biased towards literature that has been translated into Swedish. Nordic literature fairs less well in other international literature prizes.
    2. Historically, non-Western countries published and exported much less literature than they do today. Though these days China, Japan, Indonesia, Iran and India are all in the top 10 of books published per year.
    3. The Nobel has been awarded since 1901, exarcebating the previous two points. In fact 9 of the Nordic winners received their prize before WWII, compared to just one of the non-Western winners.

  2. Looks to me like the Nobel prize for literature might be a bit biased lol

  3. Why isn’t Svalbard blue? Is it because it is full of ruzzian coalminers and Armoured Bears?

  4. Nobels are known to be biased and there is a large share of poverty in the red areas, so what exactly is the obsession with Nordic d*ck measuring contests?

  5. More free and secure the country is, the more art you get.

  6. This is just a sign of socio-economic development and tells us that all these Nobel Lauretes would not become one if they were born und grew up in the red area.

  7. The ppl in the blue actually assign who the winner is so :)))

  8. Famous Dutch writer Harry Mulisch was so full of himself he was certain he would win the Nobel Prize for his latest book, so he hardly left his home this time of year expecting the phone call any time. He never won.

  9. Who would have known that a Swedish price is primarily given to people from the Nordics. Big surprice.

  10. People in comments coping so hard. “but but scandinavia is rich, free and safe” yeah dumbass. Now go think WHY scandinavian countries are rich, free and safe

  11. Though the quality and impact of laureates from the red area is incomparably higher.

  12. Bias. Science is different, but literature is best read in it’s own language

  13. So many self hating Europeans in this thread i guess you guys didn’t learn

  14. New York Times did an amazing podcast interview about the current literature situation in China. In short, if your writing doesn’t pass the censorship, you can forget about it.

  15. It’s a Western prize mostly given to Western authors. I think it’s been a century since a Norwegian author won the last time. A hundred years ago the prize had a narrower geographical focus than it has today.

  16. It’s like the Nobel of peace , Obama got one , which says much more about Nobel Prices than any article against it

  17. Svalbard not blue smh, but otherwise interstellare map.

  18. Part in blue enslaved people from part in green and made them poor for centuries.

  19. With the caveat that the country that hands these prizes is colored blue. *obama_puts_medal_on_obama_meme.jpg*

  20. You create an award, give yourself the award and are congratulating yourself for winning it? What kind of a pathetic circlejerk is that? gtfo with that nonsense.

28 million nordics are not smarter or better writers than 6.5 billion humans put together.

  21. Interesting. I guess indulging in art is a privilege. Probably there are many layers to this. Regardless, congrats to Nordic countries!

  22. Yeah, Finland with one Nobel laureate in the field of literature, in 1939.

  23. Looks like the Nobel committee is made up of members from Norway and is an European invention.

    Similar to the Oscars etc.

It’s not a UN mandated equality project.

No wonder it favours litterature from the Nordics since they are the most translated to other Scandi languages or can be best understood from a cultural perspective.

Africa, Middle East or Asia: Feel free to make your own litterature awards.

When it comes to the science awards, it probably follows a trend with the countries that publish the most research papers.

  24. In 2022 4 million books where published globally. How many were translated to Norwegian or English? And how the fuck would anybody/any committee be able to read them all?

Cultural proximity and readability is a huge factor.

  25. Yet the blue ones are less profilic in other international literature awards. Coincidence with the origin of Nobels? I think not.

  26. Random Funfact: the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature was Rabindranath Tagore. He wrote the national anthem of both India and Bangladesh, and inspired the national anthem of Sri Lanka.

The first person to win, born outside of Europe was Kipling, born in Bombay Presidency, British India.

  27. It is extremely surprising that Nobel created a prize whose voters are mainly Europeans and Nordic and they give themselves prizes based on what their cultures consider good, ethical and art.
