EU offers to scrap 80% of NI food checks but prepares for Johnson to reject deal | Brexit

  1. Good starting point. Let’s hope the upcoming negotiations can cut 100% of all goods checks.

I’m surprised the EU are going this route after they said it was impossible. I can’t imagine the UK threatening A16 was anything to do with it.

  2. Good move. When the UK rejects even this, it will be clear to all that it’s not the EU who’s unwilling to compromise or acting in bad faith.

  3. I am now quoting a comment from a German newspaper (Handelsblatt):

„… In fact, the EU has to be concerned about balancing – but only up to a certain point. She mustn’t be fooled. Should the UK end the Northern Ireland Protocol, the EU must be ready to impose punitive tariffs on British products. The member states must show unity, even if some reject a trade war. Johnson and Frost are convinced that the best way to tackle the EU is to be tough. The EU should also try the other way around.“

  4. I’m sure Ankara, Moscow and Beijing will take note that if you threaten to break a treaty with the EU, the EU will then offer you a generous improvement.

  5. So, what’s the catch?

The whole NI border thing reminds me of the pitch used to sell the EEA to the Norwegian public after the last no vote.

Thing was that previously, Norway, Denmark and Sweden had a standing border agreement that allowed travel between us without a passport etc.

The argument was that with the others becoming EU members, that agreement had to be nullified. And the only way to maintain it was for Norway to join the EEA.

  6. EU taking the high ground and giving a great deal to the UK and especially NI. If the UK govt reject this then we know they never intended to abide the protocol in the first place.
