So I was speaking with someone from Russia and they said that the war started by a civil war in Ukraine between the east and west. Apparently there are nazis in Ukraine (including Zelenskyy) and Russia is just helping out the non-nazi side. Is this true? Or what’s the whole story? I hope Reddit doesn’t take this down I’m just trying to get more information and be more informed

Try googling the following to get a basic understanding of ukranian policy and Security architectur as it would take to long explaining:
– orange Revolution
– Helsinki final Act
– maidan protests
After the crumbling of the old ukrainian government during the maidan, a SOF Operation, violating international law, took place in which russia took the crimean peninsula. The Oblasts Donetsk and Luhansk took it as a hint, that Russia would support their separation from Ukraine, even if it was achieved through violence. Indeed Russia did support them with logistics, ammunition and retreat opportunities, but not with an official act of attacking Ukraine in 2014/2015.
The ukrainian civil war lasted since 2022, with several ceasefires and peacetreaty attemps. During this time, especially in the years 2014 and 2015, Ukraine, as a government was overthrown, threw some voluntary Regiments/bataillons into Combat. The infamous Azovbataillon, before becoming part of the ukrainian homedefence forces, was such a voluntary regiment- with strong ties to, at least, ultranationalist circles. During elections, fascist and ultranational parties played no significant role in Ukraine, hence the lie auf fighting fascists and Nazis is a propaganda approach by Russia to support their war.
Russia denies Ukraine sovereignity, directly violating the final Act of Helsinki, furthermore denies an undoubtly existing ukrainian Culture, state and history, as Russia‘s approach would be bestdescribed as a claim to gain a „Great-Russia“, therefore individual culture in their sphere of influence is a threat to their claim.
The war is undeniably contrary to international law and Ukraine has every right to defend themselves, don‘t let yourself lure into those Propaganda lies of russians claiming of helping the people free them from fascism.
