>The Swedish defense ministry said on Friday it could contribute its Gripen warplanes to a Western coalition that is trying to speed fighter jets to Ukraine — but only after Sweden is allowed into NATO.
>
>The offer, included in a $200 million package of weapons, 155-millimeter caliber ammunition and other defense support for Ukraine, was the latest move in an ongoing diplomatic effort to persuade Turkey to drop its objection to Sweden joining the military alliance.
>
>“Support in the form of JAS-39 Gripen would be conditional on Sweden first becoming a member of NATO,” the Swedish Defense Ministry said in a statement.
Erdogan curls his moustaches.
So the reason why Turkey is mad at Sweden is, allegedly, because Sweden goes extremely easy on people whom Turkey deems terrorists, by letting local mafias make money on Swedish soil to fund terrorist movements in Turkey.
> Turkey says Sweden has supported members of the Kurdish Workers’ Party, or the PKK. Sweden denies this.
Since 1984, between 30,000 and 40,000 people are estimated to have died in fighting between the PKK and Turkish government, according to Crisis Group.
Turkey and Hungary are Fairweather friends; kick em out of NATO.
Erdogan needs a bloody nose. A political bloody nose.
Hungary is the only issue left Sweden. Take it up with them
As much as I think it’s disgusting that Turkey is refusing to allow Sweden into NATO, making your aid to a nation defending itself from an imperial power be contingent on your entry is a scumbag move. You either care about the welfare of Ukrainians or you don’t, using them as a bartering chip just puts you in the same category as Turkey for using Sweden as such.
So it means no jets from Sweden. Thanks for gesture thou.
Dammit stop playing games and let Sweden join! They’ll be an asset to NATO, way more than any cost associated with welcoming them!
Klart grabben ska ha en Gripen
Good deal!
Makes sense. Once in NATO, Sweden can temporarily relax its Air Force and rely more heavily on its allies, freeing up planes for transfer.
Honestly, the Gripen would be a better fit for Ukraine than the F-16.
no ty…
maybe it would help more if they promised them to Turkey instead
Hahaha what a smart move to put even more pressure on that old cunt in Turkey.
Here’s what’s really happening. Obviously, Turkey wants F-35s and is using Sweden as a bargaining chip. “Secretly,” NATO wants Turkey to have the F-35s but doesn’t want to offend Greece (Turkey’s really twisting our arm here!). Also, “secretly,” NATO doesn’t really want Sweden because frankly they’re a shitty Europartner, a good example being pushing their F-35 “competitor.” Turkey is a convenient inconvenience and is more than happy to take the blame for much of NATO realpolitik that would otherwise hurt the brand. On paper, they annoy us, while in reality, they play a crucial bad cop role. The reverse is true of Sweden: We love them on paper, but between Nazi “neutrality,” not adopting the Eurodollar, and now this business with Saab, they’re sort of a low grade thorn in Europe’s side. Disclaimer: American of Greek and Swedish descent.
I guess it could be viewed as a dick move however isn’t the reason they want to get into nato is to keep their own country safe
Pretty sure most western allies have contributed to Ukraine already without any strings attached but would you be happy living in a country that’s pretty close to Russia that Russia sees as an ally of the west and has been helping Ukraine while not being in nato itself
The real issue is Putin has puppets all over the world to do his bidding
It’s like a mafia on a global scale
