  1. Tron is a franchise that Disney is still trying to expand decades after its release, and an animated movie is not off the table.

Disney’s Creative Chief Officer has teased that an animated Tron movie could be up for grabs for any director who wanted it.

The cult classic franchise has long been something that Disney has tried to expand upon. The original film came out in 1982 and starred Bruce Boxleitner, Jeff Bridges, and more. It featured a human being brought into a computer program and fighting his way out with the help of certain programs, like the titular Tron. The movie is revered for its unique visuals and iconic moments like with the light cycles.

In an interview with Collider, Disney’s Jennifer Lee noted that the company often talks about the potential of a Tron animated project and that she would be happy to pitch it to any director who is up for taking on the challenge: “You know, here’s what you can say back to him, that I will promise to do at my next directors’ lunch. Once a month, I just have lunch with all the directors together, and I’m gonna say, ‘There has been a request. Is there anyone here, who has been dreaming of that to happen?’ We’re filmmaker driven, so then I can blame them, if it doesn’t happen. No, I’m teasing. Just tell him that I’m gonna write that down and bring that to them. Unfairly, I haven’t done that yet, so I will. I love that.”

Should such a project happen, it wouldn’t be the first time the Tron-verse went animated. Previously, a show called Tron: Uprising debuted on Disney Channel and was meant to be a prequel of sorts to the main events of Tron Legacy. However, despite impressive visuals and an all-star cast, the series didn’t last. But now, there is a new movie in the works within the universe.

The movie is called Tron: Ares, which would be the third big-screen adaptation of the franchise. The movie stars Jared Leto, Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Cameron Monaghan. Details are light on the plot and how much it connects to the previous films, and there is no release date for the film as of yet. Part of that is due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes that have dominated the last few months. However, with the writers’ strike now ended and the actors’ strike possibly ending soon, filming will continue once that hurdle is cleared, and potentially, an animated film could start afterward.

  2. Because you can’t walk down the street without hearing a young person complain about not having any old stale story lines to bore them into a creative lethargy.

  3. Yeah I’m totally in for this. And I don’t usually watch Disney animated movies.

Make Daft Punk come out of retirement for this too.
