  1. “I won’t chase short-term headlines” says the PM chasing short term headlines.

  2. In response to criticism from former prime ministers Boris Johnson, David Cameron, and Theresa May, current PM Rishi Sunak says short-termism is characteristic of politics in the UK:^1

    >Although the Conservatives have been in power for 17 of the past 30 years, the Prime Minister said that it was unfair to lay the blame at his party’s door.

    >“When I go across the country I don’t think this is necessarily about this party, or that party,” he said.

    >“It’s a sense that politics for a long time has just not focused on making the right long-term decision for the country, in many cases just taking the easy way out, chasing the short-term headline.

    >“I want to do things differently.”

  3. So he wants his headlines to last longer than his term as PM, after 2024? Why?

  4. He’s just throwing out a bunch of crap at this point.

You should just disregard anything he says. He obviously has a long term plan to benefit his own wallet at the expense of everything else.

  5. Cancelling the only long-term infrastructure project and redirecting the funds to spend billions on temporary fillers for pot holes.

I mean… Is this gaslighting? This is gaslighting right? He’s telling us an outright lie, an obvious blatant lie, and expecting us by default to just accept it. I’m sure there’s a Russian word for this, they seem to have about 20 different words for different types of lies and their intended purpose.

  6. These are the simple rules to decode anything the Tories say:-

    1) If they promise to do something, they will do the opposite. Eg:-

“I won’t chase short term headlines” = “I will chase short term headlines”

“We will stop the boats” = “We won’t stop the boats”

    Etc

    2) If they accuse Labour of doing something, it means the Tories themselves are already doing it. Eg:-

“Labour will allow immigration at record levels” = “We have immigration at record levels”

“Labour will spend recklessly and bankrupt the country” = “Don’t mention Liz Truss”

  7. Well, not only has he cancelled the Manchester leg of HS2 but he’s also selling off the land already, ensuring it won’t get built for generations. Can’t get much more long-term than that.

  8. Lmao what. This is the guy who cancelled a long-term infrastructure project so that he could use the money in the short-term to essentially buy votes for the next election because all the polls are showing that his party are going to be absolutely slaughtered at the ballot box.

“Not chasing short term headlines” my arse.

  9. It’s like *Mars Attacks:* do not run, we are your friends.

  10. Please have the election now… time this greedy party leaves!

  11. Although David Cameron, Theresa May, #johnsonVariant, Liz Truss were elected leaders, Liz Truss beating a Head of a lettuce and the also ran Sunak, a Coronation is never suitable means to give rise to any leader.

Hopefully, the Conservatives will elect a Leader before the GE.

  12. He’s not wrong though about the short term populism. I’d like to hear the opposition say something about it as well.

I’m so fed up of the showmanship politics.

  13. Only thing people want to here from Wishi Washi Rishi is when are we having the election.

  14. “I’ll let them come to me and show them a good time”

  15. I guess if we didn’t already all know he was chasing short-term headlines, this would have been the moment we all knew he was chasing short-term headlines, simply from him denying it.

  16. I see Rishi is laying the foundational work for his career in comedy post No. 10.

  17. IMO these spats are part of an orchestrated effort to make Sunak look like a ‘rebellious’ change leader.

It’s all theatre and part of an intentional co-ordinated strategy. They are all in on it.

  18. The beauty of “long term” is he can always pretend change is just around the corner.

He’ll be out of office within a year and sell a book about all the “long term” plans he had that he just never had the chance to give us.

  19. He thought it would make him look like a fearless leader not afraid of making decisions. Totally misjudged it. Sacking off a long term infrastructure development shows complete lack of strategic thinking. He’s alienated northern voters to boot. Can’t wait for them to be out of government.
