  1. >The government has u-turned on their pledge to reopen a disused rail line less than 24 hours after it was announced as part of Rishi Sunak’s “Network North”.
    >
    >The Leamside Line, which runs from Pelaw in Gateshead to Tursdale in County Durham, was included in initial announcements about the ‘Network North’ programme revealed by Rishi Sunak on Wednesday using funds originally allocated for the cancelled leg of HS2 between Manchester and Birmingham.

    >However, all references to the line have been removed from the Network North website with roads minister Richard Holden confirming the government was simply “committed to looking into” the project instead.

  2. Instead of a modern rail network we’re getting more motorways and dual carriageways instead.

  3. The hilarious thing (like the 40 hospitals and 350 million for nhs) is that they will claim they did it.

  4. Watch all the money “saved” from cancelling HS2 disappear and the Tories point to a few filled potholes as evidence that the money was actually really well spent. Complete fucking joke. Genuinely shocked they can just do something like this seemingly overnight, over a decade of work and planning thrown away so Sunak can try to create some stupid newspaper headlines.

  5. The current government is an unmitigated disaster of u-turns. It’s been this way for ages however. They have a reputation for having no depth to their policy making.

  6. The guy speaking in the article, Henri Murison, seems actually surprised that the Tories would lie!

    Quelle surprise!

  7. Meh – had Mr Andrew Adonis not offered the White Elephant to Gordon Brown in 2008, without any project/financial costing,Mr Andrew Adonis being a relatively inexperienced hack, it would have remained a colloquial Dead Parrot.

  8. Doesn’t any of Rishi’s mates own the land around the Leamside line where they can make an easy profit?

  9. A real shame. Although we arent surprised anymore. Westminster long stopped caring about us up here. Wouldve been a good expansion to the metro, connecting one of the largest parts of tyne and wear to the rest of it. Nvm then
