  1. It should be said that they mark each target with spray paint without investigating further at that point, so most of these will usually be random bits of metal such as ring pulls, spent cases etc., not mines. But all will be checked and cleared eventually to make the track safe again.

  2. Mine clearing is such a terrifying and often over looked part of war. Can’t imagine the anxiety that comes with each step. The heroism of men like these so often gets shadowed by stories of intense combat. It’s interesting how every person on the ground having a camera has highlighted a lot of these jobs that aren’t as *exciting* but still so vital.

  3. I have direct knowledge of the job they are doing.
Used to build mine and IED detectors for the British army.
More technology than just a metal detector.

  4. How thoughtful. The Ukrainians sure have developed a wonderful system – with free drone based delivery – to return the mines to the Russians who seem to have misplaced them.

  5. They are not marking findings as OP says. They are marking the swept path for those comming from behind to know the boundaries. If you find something they will yell it, get on the belly and start investigating with their fingers, and then move on if it was a false positive. Best regards a former sweeper in Afghanistan.

  6. Anyone who wants to help clear Ukraine of mines and has something to spare head over to UA EOD on YouTube. Harley Whitehead is a British guy who raised enough money to do a EOD course in Kosovo and since then he’s joined some Ukrainian volunteers – they pay themselves 50 euros a week subsistence money. When he joined up with them they had one mine detector between 5 people and some sticks with metals points, they’d been clearing 2000+ mines every month.
