What is the alternative? I mean really? Let people just drown? It’s just natural humanitarian action to continue funding this. To all the “let them drown” sayers: I hope you get into a situation where you need help, in fear for your life and someone is there to help you, even though you absolutely don’t deserve it for being a cold hearted arse who would rather let children and their mothers drown than being pro rescue.
Such a shortsighted act that not only negatively affects all of southern Europe but it also helps the people smuggling networks and the rise of extreme right wing parties all over the continent. I’ve never been more pessimistic about the future of the EU.

Immigration is a human phenomenon, nobody can stop it but we can keep people from drowning which is the moral thing to do. I’m Spanish and many of my friends (myself included) emigrated to foreign countries looking for better life oportunities. How sad is to read this sub and to realize Europe is no different from the US: A bunch of poor workers blaming even poorer people for the inequality caused by wealthy corporations and a crooked economic system.

so the far-right Italian government can do nothing to reduce the number of refugees arriving in Italy despite running their election campaign almost exclusively on this promise and instead now blames Germany for funding selected NGOs when ALL NGOs amount for less than 10% of the refugees that actually arrive on the Italian coast. You could actually argue that the German government aims to keep their own citizens from being traumatized by dead bodies washing ashore on Italian beaches during summer vacation. “You are welcome.”
