Does the government plan to do anything about the growing insecurity (that is not limited to the Gare area anymore) or are we paying 2000€ of rent for 80m2 to get robbed when we go out?

I think they’re hiring a lot more cops.
I’m telling you what they are going to do: nothing. At Gare there are more Police, but they are not allowed to intervene and arrest someone. They are literally just there to show more presence. I’ve seen the official order given by the Police-Ministry. A few years back, a person was brutally murdered in Ettelbruck in plain daylight on main street. The murderer who got caught didn’t get arrested nor prosecuted (because he was apparently mentally sick). We live in a country where criminals have more rights than non criminals…
>about the growing insecurity
I don’t think it’s growing significantly. In 2020, the number of crimes increased by 3.5% over 2019. At the same time, the population grew by 2%. On a per-capita basis, the number of crimes increased by 1.495-ish %.
The trend over several years is definitely downwards. In 2014, there were 43,000 crimes (2020: 40,000) and Luxembourg had 76,000 fewer people living in Luxembourg. Of course, there are always momentary up/down movements in criminal activity (e.g. the armored car robberies in the 90s, the current series of ATM robberies) but overall Luxembourg remains IMO very safe (in comparison to its neighbors).
I am not an expert in any way. But I understand what you’re going through. 2 yrs ago i did not bat an eyelid if I had to walk home at 3am in the city center towards home. Today I will think twice. I used to go to gym in the gare area at night and never felt unsafe. Today I would avoid it. The lighting in that area is also very poor. So you have areas that are poorly lit once the stores close.
I don’t think the govt or the mayor proactively think about this as a problem. These are real world problems with underlying links to illegal immigration, drugs, prostitution, etc etc. They don’t seem to be equipped to deal with it. This is an outsider view. A few respondents have thrown stats at you saying how dare you feel unsafe when everything is ok/under control.
I strongly believe they ignored all the growing signs in the past years (that anyone coming from other major cities would spot in a second), and now the situation is irreversible.
I don’t care if it is only perception: on these matters, perception is reality for most people.
Note: hearing politicians speaking about the problem is the best way to understand they are not culturally equipped to deal with the issue.
Let me explain why we need to keep them accountable constantly:
. Liberals do not see the issue in the first place because it does not happen to them. And when it happens to them, the only thing they do is to cry a lot and spend immense resources to protect only themselves and their properties
. Conservatives NEED the issue to be there, so that they could pose as though solvers and get voted. For the very same reason they will never ever solve anything (not to mention the fact that their economic ideology is the root cause of most crimes).
In June, two guys tried to rob me 12pm on rue Kiem, a very peaceful road that connects Neudorf to Kirchberg. Never tought it will happen to me, I ran away luckily they didnt bother running after me. I used to feel safe in Luxembourg, not anymore, its sad.
Wow I wouldn’t want to have a discussion with some people in the comment section
The issues are known, but the current minister (mr Kox) lives in a fantasy world. Sadly we need more cctv as certain areas are also used for transit and people should feel safe there (i.e. gare etc.). The procedure for setting this up in Luxembourg is mind blowing.
Also the police force needs to be beefed up, but mainly they need to be instructed (together with tje ministry of justice) to properly arrest and fast track prosecution as well as evictions. The current laws are just not up to the task. You still can’t even forcefully remove a drug dealer at your doorstep.
Oddly, the good social protection actually attracts criminals to Luxembourg as they don’t need to fear repression or jail time and get free access to drugs without residency requirements in a centralised space.
Similarly many immigrants use the 3 country area to abuse of asylum protection schemes on a rolling basis with no propper follow-up and /or tracking.
Now that the mayor has put the pressure on, suddenly kox and tanson start doing something (way too little).
They needed 2 yeara for an interministerial situation report and now they need another 3 years for small measures…
The problem is that the green party is just ideologically not capable of handling those ministries and just surpassed by reality…
