Last night someone tried to break into my duplex apartment. Currently sick with covid, so I haven’t been out and about the last few days.

I was getting a Tesco delivery to the door this afternoon, and when I tried to unlock the front door, the key just kept turning in the barrel. I had to climb over the wall between my balcony and the stairs to the front door. Half of our lock barrel had been removed, and the plates from around the key hole were halfway down the stairs.

It took about an hour to try get the door to open again. This has kind of freaked me out, and I’m considering a ring camera- but what are the legalities concerning my neighbours?

Four front doors share a fairly small little landing/porch, and the camera would catch anyone and everyone going up and down the stairs. I have a diagram.

At least you’ll know who’s riding who.

  2. Just put up the ring doorbell, no one cares about the legalities.

  3. If you’re worried then tell your neighbours why.. if offers them some free security too… my neighbour loves my cameras because he doesn’t need any… you have to pass mine to approach his house by car so hes saved some money

  4. You can get little accessories which angle it so angle it toward the stairs and away from their doors

  5. You can configure the camera in the ring app to only monitor the area directly in front of your door

  6. I think you should ask your neighbours and explain why you want to put it up. Given the situation I wouldn’t be happy with a neighbour putting one up without discussing it with me.

  7. I don’t know if your door has an peephole? Ring do a peephole camera that you can install inside your apartment. None of your neighbours would have to know you have it then.

Otherwise you’ll have to speak with your neighbours. I’m sure they’d be happy with the added security without having to pay. As others have said, you can limit the amount the motion sensor covers.

  8. Put up the camera, and some motion sensor lights, and some kind of machine gun that automatically fires a couple warning shots before unloading on any toerags who come by.

  9. You need the neighbours’ permission to record their property. Mainly, the concern would be pointing into their doors here. However if you censor those sections of the feed as it’s being recorded it’s fine.

Best case to explain what happened and get your neighbours’ permission to install one anyway.

  10. Get snap locks first. They’re designed to break on the outside, but leave the lock openable with the key.

  11. I might be corrected but as long as its only directed at your walkway and not deliberatly looking into a neighbors house its fine.

  12. You can define very precisely the areas the camera monitors. Your neighbour should have no concerns

  13. It’s legal to film people without consent in Ireland so have at it

  14. Like others say ask your neighbors first, and do what guy can to limit the range of recording so you are not recording them.

When a doorbell cam / domestic CCTV records a shared or public area (not just your private property) GDPR comes into play. But the DPC’s attitude in most cases is pretty much, “really you should sort this between yourselves before coming to me”.

  15. I put one at the road entrance to our drive which has a right of way for two neighbors. I made sure that it was pointed as far away as that part of the road as possible but it was still covering it enough to make out the reg of a car. I said it to them and shwoed them stills, they were grand with it and even asked if they could get the files if something happened. People down the road had their shed broken into and tools taken so that’s why we ordered it. We were limited by the angles, bushes, lighting or I would have put it in another spot. I’m paying a subscription which I might drop or change to a different camera, I know that there’s a Logitech one that has some great features. Very happy with having it though so maybe your neighbours will be too.

  16. See if the neighbours will chip in and just get a nest cam for security reasons. Set up a new Google account for the four apartments so yous can all access it
