17. A friend in Israel told me last year he was very worried about the worsening situation there. I made a comment about my suspicions of russian involvement in destabilisation. He didn’t care at all about the war in Ukraine. The old case of never again (except when it’s someone else).

    I have always had a lot of sympathy for Palestine – not for Hamas – for the everyday people who are caught in a totally shit situation – because it is a fact that Israel is occupying and gradually taking over and evicting civilians from their homes to move their own settlers in – and it is doing this even with the condemnation of the vast majority of the world. That is a fact. Israel is no angel. What it is doing to the Palestinian people is disgusting.

    So I am having a hard time wrapping my head around the events of the last few days – because I cannot endorse Israel – but I most certainly and categorically can not accept what Hamas is doing right now. It is as bad as anything russia is doing. It is beyond despicable. It makes complete sense that they identify in solidarity with russia – and that their leaders have had numerous meetings in russia over the last year.

    The two situations are not equivalent: Ukraine has not and never has occupied parts of russia. It has never evicted russians from their homes to move Ukrainians in. It wasn’t arresting russian children and throwing them in jail. That is what russia is doing to Ukrainians. That is also what Israel does. It has treated the Palestinian people appallingly. But what Hamas is doing is also what russia is doing – all of the horrific war crimes and actions against civilians. It is beyond appalling.

    russia – Ukraine war is very black and white. russia is completely and totally in the wrong. It is the aggressor waging a war of conquest against Ukraine. Israel-Palestine war is more black and black. They are all in the wrong. Sometimes one is the aggressor, and sometimes the other. Right now, Hamas is the aggressor and needs to be dealt with. Israel deserves peace and security. But long term peace in that region needs to involve acknowledgement and justice for the Palestinian people as well. There can be no long term stability without that. The two wars require different solutions for justice to prevail and for long term peace.
