  1. It’s protesting a compromise so was wondering which side they were on. To people too lazy to click on the article, they’re hardcore opponents of Catalan separatism.

Neutral on the issue but the sentences that were imposed on some seem a bit draconian to me.

  2. Good, socialists shouldn’t get away with compromising the rule of law in exchange for another term. Let’s see how desperate Sanchez is to stay in power.

  3. There is a big problem in Catalonia, people are being brainwashed systematically in the education system for years, and this is really grave to the point of being dangerous, I don’t even understand how we got to this extreme, as well it is well known that all the separatist movements in Europe get their funding in the Kremlin, alongside the far right, all this aims to destabilise and weaken the European Union, there is an ongoing investigation into Russian intervention into Catalonia matter.

  4. My ignorant outsider take is that compromising with separatists like this has the potential for mollifying the conflict and increasing the possibility for weakening the separatists movement in the future. I understand why some might be opposed to it though.

  5. The ‘separatists’ had the temerity to arrange a democratic vote on independence which, by the way, they won..

  6. Hey, Catalan person here(independentist too). For all who don’t know what this political process have been like, right now the PSOE’s(spain’s center-left, kinda?) Needs to make a deal with the independentist parties to be president.

There’s no indoctrination in our schools(in fact the right wing party made some insane claims that they invented like the teachers putting stones in students backpacks that spoke spanish. The guy who said that(Pablo Casado, main candidate of right wing party at the time), is currently facing trial because of that quote.

The country (both spain and catalonia) are pretty polarized and ppl of spain have been given disinformation over these years(we have media like fox news or OAN here, too). I remember when things were at its peak(2017-2020), relatives or ppl we knew that lived in other parts of spain called us asking if we were fine, which we were.

The independentist movement is a pacific one in its great, great majority(one of our main issues, is finding how to achieve independence without using any sort of violence or unilateral declaration). I wanted to write this to provide some info from someone who lives here, and because i saw some comments here that either were very disinformed, or maybe come from ppl that live in other parts of spain that dont know much about the situation in barcelona, tarragona, the towns and such.

EDIT:For extra context, Santiago Abascal, quoted in the article is our country’s Le Pen/Meloni/De Santis. He exagerates, he spends his time in parliament insulting the other parties and after some time justice will find out he lies in rallies(like Trump)

  7. >facing legal action for the 2017 independence bid

So seeking independence is against the law? WTF? Am I missing some context here?

  8. What you think about whether or not these separatists should be charged, whether their punishment is too big, etc. is actually secondary here.

The main issue is that we got a politician who wants to pardon people to get support. I guess they truly need separatists as the separation of power is obviously dysfunctional!

  9. IMO as an outsider, unless blood has been spilled, it’s *is* best to try and reconcile with separatists with deals like this rather than imposing draconian sentences. It tends to mollify people sympathetic to the separatists’ cause, while being heavy-handed does the opposite.

Source: study oh, any separatist movement in history.

  10. Amnesty is prohibited by the constitution, and the socialist party wants to bend the rules because needs some additional votes to remain in power, so it’s willing to sell the empire of law just to not lose grab of government for 4 years.
