> It is not right that, while so many people are struggling, many homes are bought by overseas buyers, who may own a property but leave it vacant; driving up prices, while families and young people are desperate to get on to the housing ladder.
> So because, one year ago, Keir Starmer set out the ambition for the next Labour government to make 70 percent of British households homeowners; because a house should be a home not an asset; and because, conference, it is time we built the homes our young people need; we will raise the stamp duty surcharge on overseas buyers to get Britain building.
Ban overseas buyers?
or at least have to have a British passport or indefinite leave to remain
What a hollow proposal. The kind of people snapping up all the property in London are of a level of wealth that would not be concerned by this.

That will not fix this.
Just introduce a tax whereby if no one is living in a property within 6 months it’s 10% of the house value per year.
ah so the rich will have to spend a little more to buy property here and milk the population, they def wont pass the costs on via increased rent
just bloody ban it, if you dont live in the country you cant buy property
If they are going to do this, they will also need to ban UK companies with foreign shareholders from buying property. I’m not even in this game, or any kind of accountant, but literally my first thought was, “no worries, I would just set up a UK company and have that buy the property”.
Love it when housing comes up and everyone turns into an expert on foreign policy
